Scarlett Johansson, a popular A-list Hollywood actress known for her role as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, had a successful collaboration with director Woody Allen on his film Match Point in 2005. Even though Johansson was not the first choice for the role, she became a favorite muse of the director. Allen praised Johansson in his memoir, Apropos of Nothing, by stating that she was “gifted and beautiful” and “sexually overwhelming.” Although these comments caused controversy, Johansson took it as a compliment.

Johansson’s Loyalty To Allen Despite Allegations

Johansson’s loyalty to Allen ran deep, as she was one of the few people who publicly supported him when he faced allegations of sexual abuse from his ex-wife, Mia Farrow. Johansson believed Allen, stating in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that she “love[s] Woody” and “believe[s] him,” adding that she would “work with him anytime.” Johansson faced severe criticism for her defense of Allen and later clarified in a Variety interview that she spoke only about her experience with him.

Backlash Against Johansson’s Defense Of Allen

Allen was accused of sexually abusing Dylan Farrow, his adopted daughter, and there were allegations of incestuous behavior and sexual abuse involving Allen and Soon-Yi Previn, Farrow’s other adopted daughter. However, Previn stated in an interview with Newsweek that she never considered Allen as a father figure. Johansson’s defense of Allen faced backlash, with many feeling that she was crossing a line.

Johansson and Allen’s Collaboration On Other Films

Johansson and Allen worked on one more project after Match Point, which was the 2006 film Scoop. They later collaborated on the 2008 film Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Although the two haven’t worked together since, Johansson still speaks fondly of the director.

Johansson is currently busy with a couple of projects, including Project Artemis and Asteroid City. Allen is working on his 50th film, titled Coup de Chance.
