Scarlett Johansson has had a great year in the MCU. In her first solo Marvel Studios outing, Black Widow actress had her film released in theaters and on Disney+. Her lawsuit against Disney for their treatment of her favorite hero’s film and compensation for streaming it directly made headlines soon after.
The studio and Scarlett Johansson settled their legal dispute over the Black Widow. Nonetheless, their relationship appears to have been repaired to some degree. The recent announcement is evidence that ScarJo will be coming back to work with Disney and Marvel Studios. However, this time as a producer.
Johansson has been a part of the Marvel Studios movie-making machine for nearly a decade. As a reason, this doesn’t feel like a huge leap for her. For the first time in months, Scarlett Johansson has opened up about her new role in the MCU.
The Black Widow Actress Discusses A Future MCU Project
Scarlett Johansson, a mainstay of the MCU, recently spoke with Collider about her decision to join Marvel Studios as a producer. Marvel has been like “working with family” for Black Widow actress, who has described her time working with the studio as a “creative playground.”
“As far as Marvel goes, it’s like working with family there. Marvel has some of the best IP ever and you can really dream big there and nothing’s ever off the table and you kind of throw all these blue sky ideas around and see what sticks. It’s like a creative playground that’s just like a dream. Again, I have that shorthand with my fellow creatives there that comes from being in the world for 10 years with those guys.”
In the interview, Johansson said she is ready to take on the challenge of producing because she has “worked [in Hollywood] for 30 years” and is ready to “[work] with people that want to be there and all want to creatively contribute:.”
“I have worked for thirty years, which is insane when I say it out loud, but I think I just understand the efficiency of how productions run and how you thin the fat on a production and make things well-oiled.
I’ve learned that the fish rots from the head, which is very, very true, I think, in any creative space, but particularly a production involves many hundreds of people, and so yeah, just working with people that want to be there and all want to creatively contribute to the same kind of idea and building that kind of creative family I think is something I’m really excited about as I produce more and more things for other people.”
Johansson Is Looking Forward To Her Return To Marvel
Scarlett Johansson’s move from on-screen to more of a production-assist role in the MCU makes perfect sense. Johansson certainly knows a thing or two about how it all works. As more Phase 1 and Phase 2 heroes leave the MCU, it would not be out of the question for fans to see those actors join production crews for future films. This universe (or Multiverse, as it is now called) and its characters are known only to a select few people on this planet. Because these people can build this thing from scratch, it’s a good idea to bring them on board to ensure the machine runs smoothly.
Furthermore, it was a pleasant surprise to learn that there was no animosity between ScarJo and Marvel Studios about their recent Black Widow lawsuit. An agreement was reached between the two parties. And this new producer role may have even been discussed during that time. Fans who feared that the Black Widow actress’ relationship with Marvel Studios would be strained can now exhale and rejoice that Johansson will remain a part of the MCU.
