Scream 6, the latest installment in the popular horror franchise, has been making waves with fans of the series since its release. The film, which takes place in New York City, features a new Ghostface killer (or killers) who are out to take revenge on the survivors from Scream 5. Here’s a recap of the film’s climactic moments.
The Final Stand
The core four survivors from Scream 5, Sam, Tara, Mindy, and Chad, are guided by Scream 4 survivor-turned-FBI-agent Kirby Reed and recurring Scream heroine Gale Weathers to an abandoned theater that has been converted into a shrine filled with memorabilia from the franchise’s past installments. This is where they make their final stand against the Ghostface killer(s).
A Shocking Twist
The survivors are interrupted during a heartfelt moment between Chad and Tara when Chad is repeatedly stabbed by not one, but two Ghostface killers. Sam and Tara find themselves trapped between the two killers and their unmasked leader, Detective Wayne Bailey. He is revealed to be the father of Quinn, the promiscuous roommate of the survivors. It’s then revealed that Wayne’s accomplices are none other than Ethan and Quinn, and they faked Quinn’s death earlier in the film to throw her friends off her trail.
A Final Showdown
Wayne demands that Sam put on the Ghostface mask once worn by her father, original Scream killer Billy Loomis. So that he can frame her for the murders of her friends and sister. In retaliation, Sam, Tara, and an injured Kirby decide to fight back against Wayne, Quinn, and Ethan. Tara kills Ethan by stabbing him in the mouth, while Sam shoots Quinn in the head. Sam then stabs Wayne to death while wearing her father’s Ghostface cloak.
The Aftermath
After the final showdown, Tara agrees to start dealing with the trauma she’s experienced by going to therapy. While Sam agrees to stop aggressively monitoring her sister’s life. The sisters reunite with Kirby, who tells them that they’re “family” now. Chad, Mindy, and Gale all survived their stabbings earlier in the film. As the group begins to part ways, Sam briefly becomes entranced by her father’s Ghostface mask, but chooses to leave it behind on the ground.
The Future of Sam Carpenter
The new film’s ending borrows elements from Scream 2 and highlights Sam’s biological link to both Billy and Nancy Loomis. Barrera’s Sam takes visible enjoyment out of murdering both Quinn and Wayne. Suggesting that the events of the film may have only further strengthened Sam’s killer instincts. Whether or not those instincts ever drive her toward full-on villainy remains to be seen.
