If there’s one thing the internet loves then it’s fan-casting. The latest one on the block is that of Sebastian Stan as young Luke Skywalker. However, it seems like, unlike other fan casts, this one has a slight chance of coming true, or at least, that’s what the internet believes.
But what does Sebastian Stan think of this? And is this even true? Let’s find out from Sebastian himself. But before that we need to know:
These rumours of Stan as young Luke are back on again since The Mandalorian season 2 finale on Disney+ had a young Luke Skywalker come in to take Grogu and train him. In the season 2 finale, it was Mark Hamill who played Luke. His appearance was digitally altered to make him look young again.
Till now nothing is known about season 3 so it’s possible that young Luke could appear again. After all, people are excited to see Grogu and how his training has been progressing. Now, they could bring Mark Hamill back and then digitally de-age him.
However, that really isn’t a viable option. For one, it looks kind of weird to see CGI done this extensively on an actor who is clearly past his prime. Two is that this kind of CGI is costly. So even though Disney is loaded and The Mandalorian is a successful show, but the cost of this CGI as a result of it being used a lot might just be too high for even them.
So the only alternative is to cast someone who resembles a young Mark Hamill, for example, Sebastian Stan.
Sebastian Stan did indeed respond to the rumours about him playing young Luke Skywalker in Star Wars projects. After all, it has been noted by fans for a long that Stan does look like Mark Hamill a lot.
Way back in 2016, people even edited a picture of Sebastian as Luke. The picture went viral and from then on people got talking about the similarity between the two stars. The next year in 2017, Stan got asked about this fan-casting as well as whether he would like to join Star Wars or not.
Back then he said that he would definitely play him. Thankfully that wasn’t the end of the entire Stan-as-Luke saga. After that comment in November 2017, he recorded a video of himself jokingly saying that Mark Hamill was in fact his dad.
Hamill, in his usual chill self, responded with kind words. He said that Sebastian was indeed a great actor and he would be really happy if he played young Luke Skywalker. However, their interactions (thankfully) didn’t end there. In 2018, Mark Hamill wished Sebastian a very happy birthday while cheekily saying how the actor could very well be his offspring.
Now in 2021, when he was promoting The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sebastian appeared on the Good Morning America show. There he was asked about those rumours again and he said that he will only believe in such rumours if Mark Hamill personally calls him and says that he will indeed share the role of Luke with him. Here is the full quote:
“Well, if Mark Hamill calls me personally to tell me that he feels inclined to share this role with me, then I’ll believe it, until then I won’t believe it.”
The main protagonists of Star Wars is Luke Skywalker and so we do know a lot about him. But we don’t know everything about him. Also, we most certainly don’t know about his adult life after he was a master of his Jedi abilities.
So we don’t know what happened to Luke between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Now since the events of The Mandalorian show take place about 5 years after the end of Return of the Jedi, so viewers could finally learn about Luke’s life. In fact, this show has the perfect opportunity to explore that.
So if Stan and Hamill are on board then we could see this exploration. But will this actually happen? Or will this remain a speculation? That remains to be seen.
