In a surprising move, Victoria Alonso, a high-ranking executive at Marvel Studios, has reportedly left the company. Alonso played a crucial role in all things related to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and was recently promoted to a newly created position in 2021. She previously highlighted the “painful” challenges brought about by the pandemic, which forced the team at Marvel to take note of how much external change was affecting their daily operations. However, following a report claiming that Marvel was unhappy with the first chapter of the Multiverse Saga and the mixed reviews for Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, a major shift is now coming from a leadership perspective.

According to reports, Alonso, who served as Marvel Studios’ president of physical and post-production, visual effects, and animation production, has reportedly left the company. Alonso had been with Marvel Studios for 17 years and played a vital role in helping the studio grow from operating above a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Beverly Hills to becoming the highest-grossing franchise in movie history following its acquisition by Disney.

Alonso’s exit comes amid the studio’s struggles with current and upcoming releases. Her departure will have a significant effect on Marvel Studios’ internal affairs, considering that she was in charge of visual effects (VFX) management for the studio. Some critics believe that Phase 5 is off to a bad start after Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania received mixed reviews. Meanwhile, impending delays for several Disney+ shows under the MCU banner have been rumored, with several of those Marvel shows expected to be pushed to next year.

Alonso joined Marvel in 2006 as chief of visual effects and post-production and played a crucial role in launching the MCU as a co-producer on 2008’s Iron Man. After the success of Iron Man, she served as co-producer on several Phase 1 films, including Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger. In 2021, she was promoted to president, physical, and post-production, visual effects, and animated production, a newly created position for Marvel Studios.

Aside from her executive title, Alonso is also known as an advocate of Marvel’s representation efforts. In April 2022, she spoke out against Florida’s anti-LGBTQIA+ “Don’t Say Gay” bill and asked then Disney CEO Bob Chapek to take a stand and make note of Disney’s focus on creating entertainment for families.

While it remains to be seen if Alonso resigned on her own or was fired from the company, this new development suggests that major changes are happening at Marvel Studios. Some anonymous VFX artists accused Marvel Studios of blacklisting them, with Alonso allegedly playing a significant role in the practice. While Marvel did not comment on the matter, this could have placed Alonso in a bad light. Regardless, Alonso’s departure could be part of the previously reported re-evaluation that Marvel is undergoing after Phase 4’s ups and downs.

Although it’s unfortunate that Marvel lost one of its high-ranking executives, this could be the change that the MCU needs to improve and retain consistency, especially now that there are a number of looming projects on the horizon.
