With four films set to hit theaters in 2023 and a growing list of new projects led by DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, the future of DC film adaptations is taking some unusual turns. Shazam is the first project on the list! The adventures of the Shazam family, especially fan favorite Mary Bromfield, continue in Fury of the Gods (Grace Caroline Currey).

James Gunn and Safran have hinted that the Shazam! Mythology might be included in their new canon, but nothing is confirmed yet. Currey addressed this uncertainty in a recent interview with The Direct.

James Gunn explained earlier. He said that the new DC universe will not completely reset everything; instead, it will be deliberate about what it keeps and where it makes a fresh start.
The bigger question, however, is: what does this mean for Shazam and his family?

In an exclusive conversation with The Direct about the upcoming sequel to DC Universe, Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ Grace Caroline Currey expressed excitement about the upcoming DC Studios films from James Gunn and Peter Safran.
She also shed some insight on how she might evolve in the DC Universe.

The first thing Currey had to say about the significant upcoming reboot was that she is a “fan” and is “really curious and excited to see” how the new DC universe would develop:

“Gosh, so I’m a fan. I am a fan of the DC universe and a bit of a comic book nerd myself… But yeah, I’m really, really curious and excited to see what [DC Studios co-lead] James Gunn does and what stories he brings out. And I’ve worked with Peter [Safran] since I was 18, and he’s just so lovely, and I think… he really elevated the horror film genre and I’m really curious to see what they do with DC.”

Although Currey admits she is “not in the conversations” to continue in the role after the Shazam! Sequel, she is more than happy to work with Gunn should he desire her involvement in any DC projects.

“I think we’re in incredible hands. I got excited about the slate, because I know James Gunn just brings so much to comic book lore and he’s so well-versed. So yeah, I’m not in the conversations, of course. You know, I’m along for the ride. And when they say, ‘Grace, it’s time.’ I’m there… I’m really, really curious. I’m really interested to see what comes up with this slate. And I think there’s gonna be a whole new breath, too, to just the world, and yeah, I’m really curious.”

Currey was later asked who she would like to play if the entire DC universe was rebooted and Shazam! was discontinued. It turns out she is determined to bring any version of Lady Shazam to life, no matter the outcome:

“I’m such a nerd. So I, you know, of course, I daydream about playing any of the characters, right? Like they’re all awesome. But, I gotta say, Mary… It’s unusual how much I feel I was made to play her and how privileged I am that I got to play her, considering I feel the way I do about her. When I first auditioned and Shazam wasn’t made yet, it was just announced that David [F. Sandberg] was going to be directing it; my brother was like Grace, ‘You’ve got to audition for this. You are Mary.’ And he pulled out his comics of Shazam and showed me pictures of her.”

Following her work in Annabelle: Creation with director David F. Sandberg, Currey was cast as Mary Bromfield in the 2019 film Shazam!

At the end of the first film, Mary and Billy’s other foster children become the Shazam Family, an adult group fighting Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong) and the Seven Deadly Sins.
Shazam Fury of the Gods requires Billy Batson and his foster brothers to go up against the Daughters of Atlas again, as Billy has taken their abilities for granted. They must stop them from using a weapon that could destroy the world to which they must travel to make peace with the gods.

Shazam Fury of the Gods hits theaters on March 17.
