Marvel Phase 4 is going ahead full steam. It has already given the spotlight to plenty of previously supporting heroes with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision.

Along with this, beloved fan characters like Loki have bathed in the spotlight too and have even helped push forward the multiversal plan of the MCU.

But apart from giving beloved characters the spotlight. It has introduced multiple new characters as well. Just in 2021, MCU fans were introduced to Loki’s Sylvie and Mobius, Black Widow’s Yelena Belova, WandaVision’s now-adult Monica Rambeau, and of course Shang-Chi.

The upcoming Eternals will add to this roster further by introducing several more new heroes. While Marvel is welcoming the new characters in the grandest way possible, but they aren’t focused on the new heroes only.

In their newest theatrical movie- Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the MCU brought back a character, fans have been wanting to see for more than a decade. Thankfully, he might stick around for far more than just a cameo in the movie.

Tim Roth has finally returned to Marvel and reprised his role as Emil Blonsky (Abomination) in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He last appeared in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk movie. He showed up for just a brief while in the Shang-Chi movie along with Benedict Wong.

The two were seen duking it out in a cage fight. But this wasn’t Roth’s first and last MCU appearance. Next, he is going to show up in 2022’s She-Hulk on Disney+.

The show will star Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters. Along with Maslany, Mark Ruffalo will also show up as Bruce Banner aka, the Hulk.

Tim Roth sat down with The Hollywood Reporter and opened up about reprising the role of Abomination. He credited Mark Ruffalo for helping him out. Here’s his quote on the matter:

“I did The Incredible Hulk [playing Emil Blonsky, aka Abomination] years ago, just because I thought my kids would be embarrassed by it. I did it for them and I really enjoyed making it. So when they came to me and said: ‘We’re adapting the She-Hulk thing. Can you come back as that character again?’ I was like, sure. It should be fun. I was very surprised though because it was difficult at first. It was only when Mark Ruffalo came in to shoot his stuff [reprising his role as Bruce Banner] that I went: ‘Oh, that’s how you do it! With a sense of humor!'”

As per Shang-Chi ‘s director Destin Daniel Cretton, Abomination in the movie got an upgrade. And viewers who have watched Shang-Chi will be able to spot the differences between the 2008 version and 2021 one.

Also, those who stayed in the theaters after the credits rolled will know that Mark Ruffalo’s Smart Hulk has reverted back to just Bruce Banner.

However, he still has his arm in a sling after Smart Hulk’s snap in Avengers: Endgame. What will the effect of this on She-Hulk still remains to be seen.

The History Of Hulk And Future Of She-Hulk

Back in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, it was Edward Norton who played Hulk. The movie was riddled with production troubles even though it was being made side by side with Iron Man.

The movie ultimately bombed at the box office. Later on, in 2012, Mark Ruffalo was recast as the Hulk for The Avengers. The character was different from the one in the 2008 movie and offered a fresh new take that was full of humor and intelligence.

The upcoming Disney+ series She-Hulk will follow lawyer Jennifer Walters, who is Bruce Banner’s cousin. The show will deal with her being green all the while managing her life.

The show is said to be a half-hour legal drama that will feature Ruffalo, Roth, as well as other characters like Jameela Jamil’s Titania.

Tim Roth, returning as Abomination in Shang-Chi and then She-Hulk, is a great easter egg or cameo that fans will surely enjoy. Also, it’s a great way to connect the past and present MCU properties. However, that isn’t all. This is also a great way of exploring other possibilities.

This is because he, along with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Zemo and Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Val, might be part of Marvel Studios’ plan to bring the Thunderbolt project. Apart from this, we may get to see Emil Blonsky in She-Hulk, and not as Abomination.

After all, Bruce Banner isn’t Smart Hulk anymore, and neither is Abomination the big bad in the She-Hulk series. Fans already know that it is Titania who is going to be the main villain in the upcoming Marvel Disney+ show. In the Marvel comics, she also gained her powers through radiation.

The nature of Tim Roth’s appearance in future MCU projects remains to be seen. But his appearance in Shang-Chi, along with Ruffalo showing up as Bruce Banner means that Marvel Studios wants fans to remember these characters. And also theorize about what could be next for them.

After all, Abomination and Hulk not having a go at each other will be a missed opportunity. But will that happen? For that, we will all have to wait a bit longer.

She-Hulk is set to debut on Disney+ sometime in 2022.
