We witnessed Shang-Chi in action during Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Without the Ten Rings, Shang-Chi was already a great martial artist and an extremely skilled combatant. After all, he was raised and trained to be an assassin by his father Xu Wenwu. Eventually, his Aunt Nan made him even stronger by teaching him his mom’s Tai Chi style. At the end of the movie, of course, Xu Wenwu passed on the Ten Rings to Shang-Chi. But what if we tell you that Shang-Chi could become even more powerful after Wong mentioned Goddess Guanyin in the recent She-Hulk episode?

In this episode, Wong approaches She-Hulk for her help with a case .The case involved the dangerous misuse of the mystical arts by an ex-student of Kamar Taj known as Donny Blaze. He was opening portals to different dimensions and transporting volunteers as a part of his act. Eventually one of them, Madisynn King, ended up at Kamar Taj thus prompting Wong to take action. During the court proceedings of the cease and desist filed by She-Hulk, Madisynn is brought in as a witness. During her witness statement, she is quite intoxicated and her statement on the stand is an absolute mess. This makes Wong ask Guanyin for her mercy in his trial.

While this was meant to be merely a funny comment to show the comical relationship between Wong and Madisynn, it might just be much more than that. As it turns out Guanyin is a Goddess who is closely related to another MCU superhero. We are talking about none other than Shang-Chi.

Who is Goddess Guanyin?

Guanyin is the Buddhist goddess of mercy in real life. However, in Marvel Comics, she is part of the Xian. The Xian is a collection of Gods and Goddesses who belong to Ta-Lo, the mystical village explored in Shang-Chi. Ta-Lo was mainly explored as the village to which Shang-Chi’s mother belonged. It was also the place where the final battle against the soul eaters and the Dweller in Darkness took place. Nonetheless, there were several aspects of the village Ta-Lo that the MCU did not explore. This includes the fact that the realm was a home to several gods and goddesses.

Now with Thor: Love and Thunder released on Disney+ I’m sure we have all seen the movie. It explores the God butcher Gorr and his mission to exterminate every God in the Universe. So, the MCU is already exploring the concept of Gods in Marvel especially Greek Gods considering the appearance of Zeus and his son Hercules in the post credits scene. This would be the perfect way to introduce the Gods of Ta-Lo as well.

The Xian or the Taoist Gods including Guanyin are very powerful. They have the ability to practice magic, transform matter, disguise their appearance, and wield cosmic and supernatural energies. They heal at an unimaginably fast rate due to their Godly force. In fact, the Xian can even revive a fatally wounded God with their collective life forces.

What does this mean for Shang-Chi?

Since Ying Li, Shang-Chi’s mother was the supposed to be the guardian of Ta-Lo there is a chance that she was somehow related to the Gods. This would essentially make Shang-Chi a half god or a demi god. Since Phase 4 is slowly trying to phase out the previous Avengers and assemble a new team of superheroes, Shang-Chi if a demi god could take the place of Thor in the Avengers. This would also make him almost immortal by giving him a long and indestructible life force.

Moreover, with his mystically charged Ten Rings which already make him immortal there are many similarities between Shang-Chi and Thor. Wong’s reference to Guanyin is even more important considering the fact that he has been working alongside Shang-Chi and Katy for quite some time now. This might mean that Wong already knows about his God status. Either way, Shang-Chi is definitely going to become a force to be reckoned with.
