Marvel at SDCC 2022 unveiled a new trailer for their upcoming Disney+ show titled She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. With its Head Writer being Jennifer Gao, the series stars Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters, a cousin of Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). Other cast members include Tim Roth, Benedict Wong, Ginger Gonzaga, Josh Segarra, Jameela Jamil, Jon Bass, and Renée Elise Goldsberry.
It is the twenty-first television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the fifteenth installment of Phase Four. As Kevin Feige announced at SDCC 2022, the series will be the last installment on Disney+ for Phase 4. Its first season will comprise of a total Nine episodes.
Created by writer Stan Lee and artist John Buscema, the character of She-Hulk first appeared in The Savage She-Hulk #1 (1980). The alter ego of She-Hulk, Jennifer Walters, is a lawyer who, after an injury, receives an emergency blood transfusion from her cousin, Bruce Banner, and acquires a milder version of his Hulk condition. Unlike Banner, she is able to retain her personality, particularly her intelligence and emotional control. However, when enraged, she too becomes stronger.
The character will have a tendency to occasionally break the fourth wall for humor and gags, as shown in the trailer. This trait was one of the highlights of She Hulk’s latest comic releases.
The Disney+ show will partly deal with the origin of the character. It will show her struggles in adapting to her new persona and balancing his superhero life, professional life, and personal life. She subsequently decides to largely stay in her Hulk form, even when representing clients as an attorney.
In the trailer, the character of Holden Holloway tells Walters, “We are going to launch a division for them (superhero humans), and I want the She-Hulk to be the face of it”. She seems to be representing Emily Blonsky (Abomination), in his trial following the events of The Incredible Hulk.
According to Marvel Studios, the series is framed as more of a comedy than previous MCU installments. The lead actress Tatiana Maslany has this to say in her latest interview with folks at CBR,
She really is the antithesis of most superhero narratives…There’s this great element of denial in her that’s relatable. For me, it was about rejecting what’s happened for as long as I could, as that’s what causes the fun tension between Jennifer and She-Hulk.
However, it is still not confirmed if the show will follow the same origin story for She-Hulk as depicted in the comic books.
Titania, played by the very talented Jameela Jamil, will go head to head with She-Hulk. In the comics too, she is the arch-nemesis of the character. In the comics, the character of Titania (aka Mary MacPherran) gets her superpowers from Doctor Doom. However, Doom has not yet appeared in the MCU, it would be interesting to see how the show writers will handle her origin story.
It will also feature Tim Roth’s Emil Blonsky (Abomination). Jennifer Walters will represent him in court for his actions against his cousin Bruce Banner and the events of The Incredible Hulk.
In the new trailer released, Hulk (Bruce Banner) is shown to be mentoring his cousin – She-Hulk (Jennifer Walters). He helps her in mastering and control her Hulk skills. His latest avatar – Professor Hulk, teaches her that being a Hulk is all about balance – and that yoga can seriously help with that – but also makes sure that she can use her powers in a crisis if needed.
However, if rumors are to be believed then Mark Ruffalo will be appearing in only the first and last episode of the series. The show will mainly focus on the life of Walters and her struggles with her alter ego.
Charlie Cox’s Daredevil (aka Matt Murdoch) first appeared as a brief cameo in Spiderman: No Way Home. In the final shot of the latest trailer of She-Hulk, he seems to be gearing up to fight She-Hulk.
Given both characters’ alter egos – She-Hulk (Walters) and the Daredevil (Murdoch), share the same profession, a conflict was obvious. In the scene, Daredevil does not appear in the mood of settling their feud in a courtroom. Daredevil is also set to appear in his own series, Daredevil: Born Again (2024).
She-Hulk: Attorney At Law is set to premiere on Disney+ on August 17, 2022.
