Fans were buzzing with excitement and speculation when rumors surfaced about Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland, and Tobey Maguire making a return in the animated film, Across the Spider-Verse. The possibility of seeing the three stars team up again, right after their appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, had fans anticipating a thrilling experience.

While the film introduced a fantastic lineup of Spider-Men from different dimensions, including Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, and Spider-Man 2099, fans couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed. However, the creators managed to include an Easter Egg involving Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man and more.

Leading up to the release of Across the Spider-Verse, Sony Pictures unveiled a poster featuring Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland, and Tobey Maguire, the three cinematic Spider-Men. Many fans saw this as a hint of their involvement in the animated film, but that turned out not to be the case.

Although Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire, and even Tom Holland didn’t appear in the sequel, there were Easter Eggs and snippets of old footage featuring Garfield and Maguire’s versions of Spider-Man. One scene shows Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker talking with Gwen Stacy’s father in a moment just before his tragic death. This footage is taken from The Amazing Spider-Man.

Another poignant moment shows Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parkers mourning the loss of their respective Uncle Bens. While technically both Spider-Men make an appearance, it is through previously released footage and not new content or voice work. But what about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man?

Similar to Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man didn’t make an appearance in Across the Spider-Verse. The film didn’t include any new footage or voice work from Holland either. However, there were subtle Easter Eggs that hinted at his presence in the multiverse.

In one scene, as Miles Morales tries to escape the Spider-Verse hub, he encounters multiple Spider-People and villains. In that moment, a chilling voice utters the words, “Hello Peter.” Fans familiar with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and Spider-Man: No Way Home will recognize the voice and its connection to Holland’s Spider-Man.

Another reference to Holland’s Spider-Man comes from Spider-Man 2099 (Miguel O’Hara), who mentions, “Don’t even get me started on Doctor Strange and that little nerd back on Earth-199999.” This is a clear nod to the events of No Way Home.

Although viewers didn’t get to see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the animated film, his presence was subtly referenced through the voice of Doc Ock and allusions to Doctor Strange. With Beyond the Spider-Verse slated for release next year, fans eagerly await the possibility of finally seeing the trio of live-action Spider heroes in the film.
