Kathleen Kennedy out as the President of Lucasfilm? Lets take a deep dive into the rumour and her Star Wars track record
Star Wars has undergone a lot of changes in the 10 years since Lucasfilm was bought by Disney. Kathleen Kennedy has since then been in charge of Lucasfilm. It is under her reign that we saw the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy and the bountiful of Disney+ shows. But as per new rumours, Kathleen Kennedy is apparently on her way out of Lucasfilm.
The 10 years of Kathleen Kennedy reign has been a mixed bag. The Sequel Trilogy was divisive even though it did great box-office business. All of the Disney+ shows greenlit under her have been success stories, with The Mandalorian and Andor being standouts among a great bunch.
For about the past five years we haven’t seen any Star Wars movies hit the silver screen. For long, it was thought that it was just Kathleen Kennedy being overtly cautious of what gets put out. This was especially after the poor reception of the Sequel Trilogy and the commercial failure of Solo. But now, new rumours indicate that Kennedy might not have been solely responsible for putting a stop to theatrical releases.
Apparently, the call came from higher up to put a pause on Star Wars movies. If that rumour is correct, then it seems like the only red mark in Kathleen Kennedy’s reign is the reception to the Sequel Trilogy. And objectively speaking, we don’t think that deserves a firing. But new rumours are already doing the rounds about her leaving her position as the President of Lucasfilm.
As per scooper and youtuber John Campea, Kathleen Kennedy will apparently leave by next year. He said in his live show:
“This is what I have heard: I have heard that the decision to remove Kathy Kennedy has already been made and that she will be gone either sometime before or very, very, very shortly thereafter the release of Indiana Jones 5… Now, I want to be very, very clear here: I cannot independently say to you and confirm to you that this is a fact. I will say that one of the two people that have contacted me has a 1000% average on the things they’ve informed me of.”
As Campea said, “I cannot independently say to you and confirm to you that this is a fact”. So there’s no way to be sure right now. But her exit will be a surprise for sure, especially since Bob Iger, who has returned to lead Disney, supposedly backs her. In such a situation it’s hard to believe Campea’s words, especially since rumours of her exit from Lucasfilm has been doing the rounds for the better part of 5 years and she’s still here.
A large part of the fandom will surely like her exit from the franchise due to the blunder that was the Sequel Trilogy. And their opinion as diehard fans needs to be respected. But going by her Star Wars record, an exit coming from her will be unlikely. Unless and until Kathleen Kennedy herself decides to exit.
