Lucasfilm and Disney are finally in a good spot with Star Wars again after the Sequel Trilogy debacle. And it’s all thanks to one show. It’s undoubtedly true that The Mandalorian has put the franchise back on the map again.

Now, the company is rightfully making use of the boost provided by the Pedro Led show to expand the Star Wars universe on Disney+ while also connecting it to the Skywalker movies. But with so many shows comes the question of- what material are they drawing from? Now, there are plenty of things within the Star Wars universe that Lucasfilm could draw from.

And they certainly have in upcoming shows like The Book of Boba Fett. This show is weeks away from premiering, while others like Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka are now in different stages of development. On the other hand, there’s Rangers of the New Republic, a spin-off of The Mandalorian that was supposed to continue the story like The Book of Boba Fett is doing.

After all, the Boba Fett show is supposedly The Mandalorian 2.5. Now, Rangers of the New Republic was announced at the 2020 Disney Investor Day. It was centered around Gina Carano’s Cara Dune after she appeared in The Mandalorian for seven eps. However, any plans regarding the show were canceled after Gina Carano was fired from the show due to inflammatory social media behavior.

After this, many believed that Rangers of the New Republic would either be canceled or put on the backburner. Now that theory has been confirmed thanks to the comments of none other than Lucasfilm’s President.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy sat down for an interview with Empire Magazine. She confirmed the status of the previously planned Mandalorian Disney+ spin-off show titled Rangers of the New Republic. Kennedy revealed that the show was currently on hold. But she says that the story planned for it will likely be incorporated into future episodes of The Mandalorian.

Here’s her quote on the matter:

“We’d never written any scripts or anything on that. Some of that will figure into future episodes, I’m sure, of the next iteration of Mandalorian.”

Rangers of the New Republic would have been done if Gina Carano wasn’t fired. After all, Cara Dune’s situation at the end of season 2 of The Mandalorian was meant to be carried over and explored in her own solo story.

However, her abrupt exit threw a wrench in Lucasfilm and Disney’s plans. We don’t know how big the damage caused by her exit was since no one knows just how many projects she was signed on for after Rangers of the Republic.

But thankfully, Rangers is currently being reworked into something completely different for the Star Wars narrative. After all, it truly would have been a shame to abandon it due to an actor getting fired completely.

What must have helped is the fact that the show wasn’t too far into development. No official stories or scripts had been written. And this made it easier for Cara Dune to get incorporated back into The Mandalorian rather than getting her journey. We don’t know what Rangers of the New Republic would have turned out to be.

But right now, Lucasfilm is trying to spread the story out amongst other upcoming Star Wars projects. So we are hoping to pick out those ex-Rangers stories in the future. But the question again is- will we get to see Cara Dune again? Is Lucasfilm planning on recasting? What do you all think?
