After the debacle of the Sequel Trilogy, the future of Star Wars is beginning to look clear and exciting. For the next few years, Star Wars Disney+ shows will primarily be representing the franchise.
Now, The Book of Boba Fett is up next on December 29, 2021. The show will stream well into early 2022, and then it should be followed by the highly anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi show in May. After that, in late 2022, The Bad Batch Season 2 and Andor will premiere. In the end, season 3 of The Mandalorian will air. And this will air out the year. Now, The Mandalorian may be carrying over into 2023, like Boba Fett.
In 2023, we will most probably get to watch Ahsoka. It might begin filming in December. Also, on the 2023 slate is Leslye Headland’s The Acolyte, which is speculated to release later on in the year. Along with these projects, 2023 could also bring the Darth Maul rumored animated series called Crimson Dawn and maybe Lando. So, there’s round-the-year content in store for Star Wars fans on Disney+.
However, things are not that certain on the theatrical front. Last Winter, Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm President, announced that Patty Jenkins would be writing and directing Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. This will be the first movie to drop since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. The official press release said that Rogue Squadron was aiming for a December 22, 2023 release.
After that, Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie was going to premiere sometime in 2025 supposedly. And last but not least, the Kevin Feige film would be dropping sometime in 2027 or maybe even beyond. This was the plan that all Star Wars fans knew till now. But it looks like there has been a sudden change in plans. Rumors abound that there’s another Star Wars movie in the works. If this turns out to be accurate, then the timetable of the theatrical release of the franchise has now changed entirely.
BigScreenLeaks reported that a new Star Wars movie was getting ready to film in 2022, unrelated to any of the previous Star Wars movies announced. Multiple credible sources have corroborated this report and even teased that the movie will be set during the Old Republic era. One of these other sources is Star Wars News Net.
The site has shared that this new Old Republic film will be released in December 2023. As per the rumor, Rogue Squadron has got a significant rewrite, and all focus is on getting the story right.

There's a #StarWars film planning to shoot next year. It's not Taika's film, Feige's film or Rouge Squadron…

As a result, Lucasfilm is pushing Rogue Squadron back, and this Old Republic movie will occupy its initial release date.
As per the latest rumors, Patty Jenkins has left Rogue Squadron due to scheduling issues. As such, the movie has been indefinitely delayed. There were rumors of multiple rewrites and more issues behind-the-scenes which presumably ultimately led to Jenkins’ departure.
So as of now, we don’t have Rogue Squadron to look forward to anytime soon. However, hopefully, the Old Republic movie does get made.
If this Old Republic rumor gets proven correct, then the future of the franchise would change drastically. The Disney+ Star Wars projects have dramatically changed the public reception towards Star Wars projects after the Sequel Trilogy proved incredibly divisive.
Two seasons of The Mandalorian and multiple forays into the world of animation have been incredibly successful for the franchise and the streaming platform. As such, it makes sense that Lucasfilm is focusing on developing more spin-offs and other Star Wars content for Disney+. However, in the end, Star Wars is a very theatrical franchise.
And Lucasfilm knows that people want to see Star Wars movies told on the screen. So the news about the new film is very encouraging. Also encouraging is the information about Rogue Squadron. After all, one of the things about the Sequel Trilogy that displeased fans was the rushed nature of it all that resulted in poorly developed stories.
They didn’t have a developed plot and were making things on the fly, especially in the last movie. Sequel Trilogy leads Daisy Johnson even talked about how the writers were flip-flopping until the end between making Rey a no-one and making her Palpatine’s granddaughter.
So Lucasfilm taking its time with Rogue Squadron means they have learned from their previous mistakes and are now trying not to make them again. This is the right move. The news of a new Star Wars movie shooting next year was expectedly met with surprise. After all, beyond Rogue Squadron, none of the other films have been given an official release date.
But for those who have kept up with Star Wars movie rumors for years, news of this movie being set during the Old Republic makes a tonne of sense.
Several years back, there were a lot of rumors that the Knights of the Old Republic Trilogy was being made. It was going to be written by Laeta Kalogridis. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy also hinted during the 2019 Star Wars Celebration that the Old Republic movies could do future projects.
Back then, she said that Lucasfilm was looking at all possible options. Now, it has been a couple of years since those words. But Lucasfilm has been working away behind the scenes, and they consider the Old Republic a great place to draw from.
Now the movie will have to begin production next summer. So a significant portion of the casting, writing, and concept work must have been done already. It might seem random to make an Old Republic movie out of nowhere. But when coupled with the upcoming KOTOR remake, things do begin to make sense.
Come 2023, EA’s exclusive deal on Star Wars games will expire. Thus, this will open the door for the Sony and Lucasfilm Games partnership before Old Republic’s movie release. Think that’s all? It gets better for Star Wars fans.
Now that Rogue Squadron has been pushed back, it seems like Star Wars movies are happening again. Lucasfilm’s plans on releasing movies every other year will allow time for significant development time. And that will hopefully make the films better.
The first sign of that seems to be the Old Republic movie that is moving ahead of schedule. So it looks like Star Wars droughts are a thing of the past. 2022 will possibly start the trend of round the year content on the streaming platform. And if all goes well, then fans will get to enjoy theatrical movies along with them. Here’s to hoping that Star Wars movies are a common occurrence once again rather than a once in a blue moon phenomenon.
