While a full Season 5 of Rebels may not be happening, the upcoming Mandalorian spin-off series Ahsoka will serve as a follow-up to the series. The show will feature live-action debuts of Rebels characters like Hera Syndulla, Zeb Orellios, and Grand Andirmal Thrawn. However, it remains unknown how much of a sequel Ahsoka will feel like to the canceled animated series.

During a recent interview with EW, Dave Filoni, showrunner of Star Wars Rebels, teased a continuation of the series in the upcoming Ahsoka show. When asked if Ahsoka is just a Season 5 of Rebels but in live-action, Filoni seemed to agree to an extent, stating that it’s an interesting question.

Filoni added that he doesn’t limit things like keeping animated stories separate from live-action, and that everything he has done in the Star Wars universe has led him to this point. He also said that Rebels is a different style than Clone Wars and that working with Jon Favreau in The Mandalorian created an opportunity to see how Ahsoka works as a character in live-action.

There was talk about a Rebels sequel series set to follow up on the events teased at the very end of the show. However, those plans seem to have been abandoned. For all intents and purposes, Ahsoka is the Rebels sequel. It may not be animated like the original series, but it will serve the same purpose. Additionally, Ahsoka will be part of the greater Disney+ MandoVerse, which will eventually lead to a MandoVerse movie.

It remains to be seen if Ahsoka will be able to tie up Rebels threads and move the Mandalorian story forward. Nonetheless, fans of the animated series may finally get the goodbye they’ve been wishing for from the Rebels crew.
