Star Wars Will Surpass Marvel In 2022 In This One Unique Way

In January 2021, the MCU debuted its first live-action Disney+ show- WandaVision. It was a massive success and set the stage for the other MCU shows that followed it, like Loki, Hawkeye, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and What If..?

These shows dominated the pop-culture space from the moment they premiered. From social media trends to viewership records, these Marvel shows were on every chart.

But the same wasn’t the case for Disney’s other big franchise- Star Wars. The franchise set in a galaxy far, far away, released only two animated shows and The Book of Boba Fett in 2021. It also needs to be mentioned that the Boba Fett show was released just before New Year’s Eve.

Now 2022 is here, and it has come with some changes and a new barrage of TV shows to talk about. It seems like this year there will be several Star Wars live-action shows to talk about, and lesser Marvel shows.

This is in contrast to 2021, where Marvel was everywhere, and Star Wars was barely on the scene. Right off the bat for Star Wars, The Book of Boba Fett will finish airing a huge chunk of its episodes in 2022 on Disney+.

This is only setting the stage for what will come next for Star Wars. In fact, as one Redditor pointed out, there will almost be as many new episodes of Star Wars shows as there are weeks in a year.

So by the time, you see every show’s episode, it will probably be time to go Christmas shopping. This is a welcome change after not just a lackluster 2021, but also the disastrous and dull big-screen projects.

The Rise of Skywalker’s divisiveness especially compelled Disney to go back to the drawing board and consider what Star Wars audiences wanted. It’s telling that right now, there are no new Star Wars movies in theaters, but a ton of new television is set in the galaxy far, far away.

It certainly feels like the franchise is trying to earn back the goodwill of fans with this new approach.

It needs to be said that the much hyped-up Rogue Squadron movie announced with director Patty Jenkins is currently delayed. And any rumors of other Star Wars movies right now are just that- rumors.

What Are The New Star Wars Shows Coming In 2022?

Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi And Mandalorian

Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi And Mandalorian

Here are all the Star Wars TV shows coming to Disney+ soon.

  • The Book of Boba Fett had six more episodes to go after its December 29, 2021 premiere.
  • As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the Obi-Wan Kenobi show has six episodes.
  • Andor will have 12 episodes, as confirmed by Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy in a 2020 sizzle reel.
  • The Mandalorian Season 3 is currently filming, and it will have eight episodes. Since its two seasons had eight episodes each, it feels safe to say that they will probably go with another eight.
  • Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 2 was officially confirmed on August 5, 2021. It could have 16 episodes like its first season, but it’s just speculation right now since the episode count hasn’t been confirmed.

So overall, more or less, there are still about 40 episodes of Star Wars shows that we will get to see in 2022.

What Are The New MCU Shows Coming In 2022?

Moon knight And She-Hulk

Moon knight And She-Hulk

Now let us compare this with what Marvel has to offer right now.

  • Moon Knight has been confirmed for six episodes.
  • She-Hulk has been confirmed for 10 episodes.
  • Variety has reported that Ms. Marvel will have six episodes.
  • The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will just be one TV movie.
  • I Am Groot is an anthology series full of only animated shorts.

So excluding I Am Groot (because it is offbeat and we don’t know what will be the runtime of these shorts), Marvel will release 23 episodes of tv shows throughout the year. That’s less than the 36 episodes released in 2021.

It also needs to be said that there are a lot of Marvel TV shows coming out with release dates that we don’t know about. Production on the second Loki season is expected to begin in January. So a late 2022 release is indeed possible.

However, it really seems unlikely since Marvel tends to plan everything and rarely makes changes in its release schedule to accommodate something absolutely new.

As for other shows like Armor Wars, Ironheart, and Secret Invasion, they don’t have any fixed release dates. However, Secret Invasion did begin filming in September 2021. But we don’t know if it will premiere in 2022.

Marvel And Star Wars

However, we don’t mean to suggest that Marvel is going through a rough patch. 2021 was a huge year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe after its unintended break in 2020 because of the pandemic.

But the franchise reared back fiercely the next year, and you only need to see the reactions and reviews of Spider-Man: No Way Home to understand just how much Marvel is thriving going into 2022. Also, they have the one thing Star Wars doesn’t do in 2022- big movie releases.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, etc… are all coming to theaters this year, and they are all hugely hyped-up movies. In comparison, as we mentioned before, Star Wars has nothing to show on the big screen this year.

But it’s still interesting to note that Marvel will have to slow down a little as Star Wars begins gaining steam. But will Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor be as popular as Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel? We will have to wait and watch for that.
