After the conclusion of The CW’s Arrowverse with the final season of The Flash, fans have been eagerly anticipating the future of their beloved characters. Stephen Amell, known for his portrayal of Oliver Queen/Green Arrow in Arrow, recently shared his thoughts on James Gunn‘s upcoming DC Universe (DCU) and the potential casting of the new franchise’s Green Arrow.

Mixed Messages And Uncertainty

During a Whatnot live autograph signing event, Amell was asked about his opinion on James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU, particularly in regard to someone else taking on the role of Green Arrow. Amell expressed his confusion, stating that he receives mixed messages about the situation and wishes everyone involved the best:

“I don’t know, man. I don’t know. Those guys, the DCEU, they need to decide if they think that they’re better than television or if they want to participate. Because I get mixed messages, which to me just signals that, I don’t know. You guys do your own thing. We did our thing. I wish everyone nothing but the best. I want nothing more than amazing movies, but right now, they need us a lot more than we need them.”

Amell, considering himself a custodian of the character Oliver Queen, drew a parallel to Tom Welling, who portrayed Superman in Smallville, emphasizing that no one asks Welling about the new Superman:

“I am a custodian for Oliver Queen, and [Grant Gustin] is a custodian for Barry Allen in the same way that… look, I don’t think anyone’s asking Tom Welling how he feels about who’s going to play the new Superman.”

Embracing Change And Excitement For The Future

Despite acknowledging that there will inevitably be another Oliver Queen in the future, Amell expressed optimism and excitement about the new iteration:

“Now, I get the proximity and stuff like that, but there will be another Oliver Queen. There will, and it’ll be new and cool and exciting, and however much the internet hates it is probably a direct indication as to how good it’s going to be.”

Amell also expressed his confidence in the casting choices made by the DCU, stating that the selected actor for Green Arrow will do an amazing job:

“You’ve got to remember that these people aren’t picked at random. Very, very smart people think long and hard about how they’re going to go about this, and I’m sure that whoever they pick, if in fact they do, maybe they don’t care about the character, I don’t know, will do an amazing job.”

While James Gunn’s upcoming DCU, with its first chapter titled Gods and Monsters, has not confirmed the inclusion of Green Arrow or any characters from the Arrowverse, fans remain hopeful. As seen in the Arrow series, Green Arrow has the potential to function as a street-level hero and may find a place in the DCU’s future chapters, even if not in the initial installment.

Although there is uncertainty regarding Green Arrow’s involvement, it’s important to remember that James Gunn’s DCU is planned to be an extensive interconnected universe, similar to Marvel Studios’ MCU. While the initial slate of projects does not indicate Green Arrow’s presence, there may be opportunities for his inclusion in later chapters. Given Green Arrow’s enduring popularity and legacy within DC Comics, it’s highly likely that Oliver Queen will make an appearance in Gunn’s DCU, albeit potentially portrayed by a different actor.
