Steven Spielberg, director of Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones, has been linked to directing the Fantastic Four revival from Marvel Studios, according to a rumor that began circulating earlier this week.

We have an update on how near the iconic director Steven Spielberg may be to entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe, after reports that he is being considered to direct a revival of the Fantastic Four franchise.

Although Jon Watts had been attached to direct, he recently dropped out owing to creative burnout from the MCU’s hectic production schedule. Spielberg would be a fantastic candidate to direct the film, and audiences are eager to see Marvel’s First Family on the big screen again.

It was just a matter of time until this breach spread over the internet, as expected. Following the tweet, a variety of stars, comic book characters, and forthcoming Marvel Phase 4 films began trending on Twitter, including Steven Spielberg and the Fantastic Four.

Ex-director of marketing at Montclair Film Mike Sampson tweeted the rumor mentioning Spielberg’s interest in directing Fantastic Four:

Did Marvel Studios Really Approach Steven Spielberg?

Our best guess is that he was. Spielberg’s impact on the science fiction genre is similarly far-reaching, inspiring such popular Netflix productions as Stranger Things. Given the Fantastic Four’s affinity for science fiction, Spielberg seems like an obvious choice to helm the movie adaptation.

The Fantastic Four’s origin story would have benefited from his cinematic vision and extensive expertise in the genre. However, any changes would have had to be consistent with the characters’ conception in the comics and their place in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Are The Rumours True?

Variety’s Adam shares his thoughts on Twitter calling the rumor extremely absurd. He states that Steven Spielberg directing the Marvel Studios adaptation of Fantastic 4 is not genuine:

Even still, the speculation that Spielberg would direct the Fantastic Four film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe caused a frenzy among Marvel fans. As of this writing, neither Disney nor Marvel has replied to our request for comment on the report. If either studio states the rumors, we’ll update this item accordingly.

That said, whether or not Marvel Studios invited him to direct is unknown. Naturally, the rumor mill around the Fantastic Four film reboot makes us wonder if the rumors are worth our attention. If anything, experience has taught us to treat such information with a grain of salt.
