Ian Joyner, Visual Development Supervisor at Marvel Studios, has revealed another piece of his artwork from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, this time showing fans his final concept for the Steven Strange Variant from Earth-838.

Supreme Strange, this take on the Sorcerer Supreme, was an Illuminati member who “lost his way” and was later destroyed by Black Bolt after creating an incursion through the Darkhold.

Doctor Strange 2 provided the MCU with its first actual glimpse of how numerous Variants of major MCU super heroes exist throughout the Multiverse, most notably Strange himself, as four separate incarnations of the doctor made their official debut. Supreme Strange from Earth-838 was among them, with the storyline showing that he was the very first of these different versions to use the Darkhold.

The sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange, released in May 2022, revealed many new realities because of newbie America Chavez‘s (Xochitl Gomez) multiverse-jumping abilities. A variant of Strange functioned as part of the Illuminati, the most formidable team of Marvel heroes to emerge in that known universe, until he was tainted by the Darkhold.

Strange Supreme was advertised a few weeks before the film’s debut with a limited-edition Funko Pop! Even though he only had a few minutes of screen time in flashback form, he was depicted in the initial teaser via his memorial in front of the Sanctum Sanctorum.

Fans now have their first genuine view of this stunning Strange Variant courtesy of a new image from the film’s development, which was released long after Doctor Strange 2 hit the movie theatres and made the next huge step toward the Multiverse Saga.

The Supreme Strange Variant from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’s first complete image was posted on Instagram by Ian Joyner, the visual development supervisor for Marvel Studios.

His costume and the Cloak of Levitation, which hangs around his back and has a considerably longer collar than the red cloak worn by the Prime Strange, are a striking midnight blue color. In contrast to Sinister Strange‘s moustache and goatee or his untamed beard, this version of the hero is clean-shaven, just like the original Prime Strange.

“My final approved concept for Supreme Strange,” writes Joyner. “It was really fun exploring the various looks to convey the attitude and history of each Multiversal Strange. We didn’t get to see much of this costume in the film other than the awesome statue production designer Charlie Wood and his amazing team created for the memorial, but costume designer Graham Churchyard and the incredible costume team brought it to life brilliantly.”

Joyner also praised Keith Christensen, a concept artist. He said, “Keith Christensen had already designed a fantastic look for Mordo utilizing Armor Relics and ornate softgoods that I wanted to use as inspiration to try and anchor them to the same world. Really fun seeing all the costumes on display at the Premiere and various other venues.”
