Marvel Studios has come a long way since 2008’s Iron Man, as evidenced by what was released in 2021 and what is planned for release in 2022. Most people are now excited to see Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, after its second full trailer went viral during Super Bowl LVI.

Multiverse of Madness will focus on expanding the magical mayhem of Strange and Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff. The trailer hints at a dangerous prospect for Strange that made him vulnerable. The move shows him looking for answers to cure him of this multiverse drama.

Bringing Back Nostalgia

Doctor Strange’s last MCU appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home started the trend of bringing back old heroes. This has sparked nostalgia. There are no boundaries to what the Doctor Strange sequel can bring to the story, from Patrick Stewart’s vocal tease as Professor Charles Xavier to the sight of Captain Carter’s shield from What If…?

Some fans also noticed a variation of Iron Man in the trailer, but the visuals led them to believe that this was Superior Iron Man from the comic books. After hearing this theory, the character’s creator took to Twitter to express himself on the subject.

After the Super Bowl LVI TV spot for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premiered, Superior Iron Man became a trending topic on Twitter. Iron Man’s variant as Superior Iron Man is one of many possible cameos and variations in the MCU, as hinted at by an unclear still from the trailer.

The idea of Superior Iron Man pops up in a TV spot after the Super Bowl. Even a sped-up still from the trailer shows a glowing character coming at Wanda.

When asked about the trailer, Tom Taylor, a Marvel writer and co-creator of Superior Iron Man, shared his thoughts as well as some background information on the superhero he helped bring to Marvel Comics. Two panels from a story where Tony saved Matt Murdock’s sight were included in this; but the story ended in an argument between the two of them.

When asked about Marvel Studios’ plans for the character, Taylor admitted that he had no “inside information,” but he explained what appeared to be happening on screen. When this Tony Stark is angry, his Endo-Sym armor emits a red and orange glow, according to the writer, who shared this information with fans:

“Hey, there’s a UNIQUE QUALITY for “Superior Iron Man.” I’m not privy to any details, but Tony’s Endo-Sym armor was built by Yildiray Cinar and me to emit a red/orange glow when he was enraged.”

Cover art for Superior Iron Man, Tony Stark’s white and blue suit-wearing alter ego, was also included in the first post.

The Endo-Sym Armor

Speaking about the character’s Endo-Sym armour, Taylor said that he would like to see it on the big screen in the future.

All of the Endo-Sym armor’s components are made of liquid and are based in part on symbiotic biology. As soon as the suit touches the skin, the material hardens instantly and is activated by the wearer’s mind.

Finishing with another iconic image of the full Superior Iron Man suit, Taylor showcased its silvery-blue color scheme and sleeker physical design compared to previous Iron Man suits. The suit’s pronounced hips, according to the author, are an intentional design choice.

Several glimpses of Superior Iron Man were shown in both clips, but the lighting and perspective could change when the movie releases. In the event that this character is in fact a new Tony Stark, then there could be redemption made on behalf of the MCU’s Tony Stark.

Captain America: Civil War hinted at Tony’s darker side, but it was largely motivated by a desire to avenge the deaths of his parents. How could you possibly take Tony’s heart and soul from him at such a tense moment? The MCU may be getting one of its most terrifying characters yet.

Tom Cruise as Iron Man and Marvel Studios’ Illuminati have both been mentioned as possible options in this new film, though it’s not clear if Tom Cruise is appearing. Professor X and Baron Mordo have been revealed on the panel thus far, but there are still a few empty seats to be seen too.

Whether or not this is the same Tony Stark who appears in this scene is a mystery, but dimensional barriers have now been broken down, so anything is possible. Either way, the MCU’s Doctor Strange and the Scarlet Witch are likely to engage in the most intense conflict of their lives.

Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled for release on May 6th 2022.
