DC Studios is set to introduce Krypto, the Super-Dog, in the upcoming Superman: Legacy movie, according to director James Gunn. In an interview with the Toronto Sun, Gunn confirmed that the superhero pet would make an appearance, with Krypto having most of the same powers as Superman, only proportionate to his canine body. Krypto will be a worthy sidekick, with approximately human-level intelligence, but still retaining canine traits and interests.

Gunn’s plans to incorporate the comics-inspired characters and stories in his projects, including The Brave and the Bold, will include some light-hearted elements, making them more upbeat and emotional. In another interview, Gunn expressed his interest in a live-action Krypto, with or without his involvement in Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy.

Krypto’s appearance in the new DCU is a scoop, as confirmed by James Gunn and Chris Pratt in the interview. Gunn jokingly offered Pratt the role of Krypto, adding that he would pay him in crypto-equivalent to zero dollars. However, Pratt confirmed that there would be a character named Krypto in Superman: Legacy, breaking the news.

The addition of Krypto is a smart move, as he is an important part of Superman’s backstory, having first appeared in Adventure Comics #210 in 1955. Krypto has remained a popular character, appearing in numerous comics and animated series, and will undoubtedly be a welcome addition to the new Superman movie.

The introduction of Krypto in Superman: Legacy could open the possibility of his appearance in other movies within the DCU, such as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The live-action Krypto will likely be a hit with fans of all ages and could potentially lead to his standalone movie in the future.

The release of Superman: Legacy in theaters is scheduled for July 11, 2025.
