Played by Tatiana Maslany, Marvel’s upcoming She-Hulk series has been in discussion over social media ever since it was announced. A recent Reddit image revelation shows the star’s striking resemblance to the nominal character in the comic books created by John Byrne during his run with the franchise in 1989.
This new image posted by a fan comparing Tatiana Maslany, the She-Hulk actress, to the titular comic book character has created a buzz. Kevin Feige announced the idea of a She-Hulk based series to be released on its streaming partner Disney+ among a number of other shows at D23 Expo 2019.
Almost a year after that, in September 2020, the franchise announced that the Orphan Black star was cast for the role. The show has an abundance of talent associated with it. The show is believed to be lead by the Rick and Morty writer, Jessica Gao, and Kat Coiro is supposedly directing many of the series’ episodes. While an exact date of release is still not out yet, the series will air on Disney+ sometime in 2022.
The superhero comedy series will take place in continuity with the current MCU setting and will tell the story of its identifying character Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany). Walters is a lawyer in New York, and she inherits powers of the Hulk from her cousin Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), after having undergone a blood transfusion. However, the two characters slightly differ in some way.
When Banner goes green, he loses his sense of self, his intelligence and will power. But instead, when Jennifer turns into She-Hulk and attains a hulking super-strength, she is capable of holding on to her conscience and original personality. Other than Maslany and Ruffalo, the show stars a number of actors, including Tim Roth, reprising his role as Abomination from The Incredible Hulk, Renée Elise Goldsberry as Amelia, Jameela Jamil as Titania, and Ginger Gonzaga in a role that is yet to be disclosed.
Recently a Reddit user by the name henning-a posted a picture comparing Tatiana Maslany to the comic book version of the character, and we are amazed by the striking similarity between the two. The image was created by putting the two next to each other in order to emphasise the resemblance, with a picture of Maslany from her social media on one side and an image of John Byrne’s creation of the She-Hulk. This comparison shows an extraordinary symmetry in their facial structure and the actress matches the features exactly with the comic book character, not only that, the image shows how the two share the exact same hairstyle as well. Here is the Reddit image in question.
It is true that Tatiana Maslany is the first official character to be stepping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as She-Hulk in her upcoming Disney+ series. But the actress is not the first to have ever been considered for the role. The role of She-Hulk was once offered to another actress back in time. In the 1990s, shortly after John Byrne’s run began with Marvel comics, late screenwriter Larry Cohen was working on a live-action She-Hulk movie. Actress Brigitte Nielsen was cast for the role of She-Hulk.
Not only that, while the film was under development, a few images of the actress in the costume were revealed for promotional purposes. However, with time, the film was entirely discarded as it never made it into the flesh. Fortunately, the failure of the first project did not impact the idea and now the character has found a new spotlight, being starred alongside her cousin, and also being characterised as a lovely and reliable personality, doing justice to the comics.
Marvel’s move of casting an actress and making her appear so as to resemble the original comic book character so much is only an advantage. Not only for the franchise, but for fans who absolutely love it when their favorite characters are similar to that of the source material and are justly brought to life, both on the big screen and the small screens. Thus, when it comes to the first step of development, Marvel has hit an ace by casting Maslany, as she obviously possesses all the visual characteristics to be a remarkable superhero. Fans are now more eager to see the actress perform her role of She-Hulk. But the wait will have to continue till the show’s release on Disney+ 2022.
