Episode 4 of “The Last of Us” was a shorter episode with just around 45 mins of runtime compared to the more than 1 hour of the previous ones. But the episode packed a lot of punch and set up things to come in the future. What are they? Let us discuss.

What Did Episode 4 Of The Last Of Us Foreshadow For The Future?

Joel in Episode 4

Episode 4 of “The Last of Us” foreshadowed multiple things. One of them is hidden in the scene when Joel and Ellie camp out in the forest. Ellie asks why they can’t light a fire, so Joel says that there might be people around. The immune girl responds by assuming that they might get robbed. But Joel says that it’s not the only worry.

What he wants to imply is that there will be people looking to take advantage of Ellie sexually. In the game there is a section where Joel has to rescue Ellie from the clutches of a man named David who is a man-eater and a pedophile. So this scene could be foreshadowing that.

Along with this, there’s a scene where Joel teaches Ellie how to properly use a gun. While Ellie didn’t use the gun again after firing it at the man trying to kill Joel, but she will soon have to use it. In the game, there is a section where Ellie will have to look after and protect Joel after he gets injured.

As such, this scene could be foreshadowing Ellie will taking charge and protecting both of them later on.

What Did The Episode Foreshadow Within Itself?

In the beginning of Episode 4, it is repeatedly indicated that the reason Joel doesn’t want Ellie to have a gun is because he doesn’t want her to be traumatized with violence at such a young age. She is just a child and he doesn’t want her to have to make adult decisions right now.

So it’s certainly ironic and a foreshadowing of what he has to encounter at the end of the episode when he sees a young kid holding a gun to his face and smiling. The young kid and the man we saw at the end are Sam and Henry. The former is the younger brother while the latter is the elder one. The two of them are clear foils to Joel and Ellie.

In the game, Sam gets bitten by a runner and Henry kills him. Later on, overcome by guilt, Henry commits suicide. This is a representation of why Joel is so reluctant to form a bond with Ellie. He has lost so much already, with Sarah and Tess dead, and Tommy missing, that he won’t be able to bear it if Ellie dies too and he fails to protect anyone.

It’s possible that we will see this foreshadowing in the next episode. So stay tuned for more updates.
