After a fairly faithful adaptation of The Last of Us game in Season 1 of the HBO series, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are teasing significant changes for Season 2. Although they have no plans to go beyond adapting the game’s story, they have acknowledged the potential for small changes within it. With this in mind, fans can expect the show to tackle the events of The Last of Us Part II, albeit with some twists and turns along the way.

In an interview with Deadline, showrunner Craig Mazin revealed that Season 2 “won’t be exactly like the game.” While some changes will be radical, others will be more minor. Mazin stressed his anxiety about Season 2 and how much he wants to “do a good job on this.” Similarly, he told GQ that some elements will be different, some identical, and some enriched. However, he assures fans that the goal remains to deliver a show that makes them happy.

Mazin also spoke about incorporating some of the more controversial aspects of Part II, including Abby’s character. He and Neil Druckmann plan to adapt the story to television as they see fit, and the main characters that are crucial to the storyline will likely be portrayed. But for now, it’s too early for Mazin to commit to anything in print.

While fans eagerly await the release of Season 2, the exact changes that Mazin and Druckmann will make remain unknown. However, it’s possible that the show will keep nearly every beat from the game, with changes only fleshing out the story further. There’s also a possibility of a reduced role for Pedro Pascal’s Joel Miller, according to Bella Ramsey, who is excited to be back in Canada working on the second season.

Where the TV series could differ from the game is in the narrative structure. While Part I was linear, Part II featured more flashbacks and even a retelling of the events from the perspective of another character. Adapting this structure could be challenging, but it’s something that Mazin and Druckmann may consider.
