Bella Ramsey, the leading star of HBO’s The Last of Us, recently spoke up about the series’ controversial Season 1 finale. Ramsey played the character of Ellie Williams in the television adaptation of the popular PlayStation video game franchise.

Ramsey stated that the events of the Season 1 finale would “massively” shock and divide fans, just like in the game. In the finale, Pedro Pascal’s Joel lied to Ramsey’s Ellie after brutally murdering the Firefly scientists who were going to attempt to extract a cure from Ellie, potentially killing her in the process.

When asked about Joel’s controversial decision, Ramsey stated that while the immunity was one of the things that made Ellie special, the crux of the story was that Ellie herself was special despite her immunity. She delved beneath the surface level meaning of the story and stated that she believed Joel made the right decision in saving and lying to Ellie in the finale.

Ramsey also joked about the doctors set to operate on Ellie in the series, saying that they had not been in formal education for a while and were just going to “chop out her brain” without considering the possibility of extracting a cure to save humanity.

The Big Question

The Last Of Us Season 2 Director Promises Major Changes From Part 2 Game – Fans Divided

The Last of Us has been provoking the same debate since it was first released on PlayStation 3 in 2013. The Season 1 finale was meant to make viewers think about how far someone would go to save the thing they care for.

While Season 1 looked at this question from a point of love, with Joel saving Ellie, Season 2 will look at the same question through the lens of hate. Ramsey’s defense of the Season 1 finale shows that the events of the show are meant to provoke discussion and make viewers think about the choices made by the characters.
