Bella Ramsey, the star of HBO’s The Last of Us, recently shared their thoughts on the queer representation seen in several episodes of the hit TV adaptation of the PlayStation game. Despite the show receiving near-universal acclaim, it has faced criticism for its on-screen depiction of queer romance.

Troy Baker, star of both the TV show and video games, praised the level of representation as “beautiful” and emphasized the human story of love that underpins the franchise. However, Bella Ramsey, a member of the queer community, had yet to comment on the representation until now.

Bella Ramsey has defended the level of queer representation in a new interview, stating that they “definitely connected with it.” They cited the character description of Ellie as “gay” and “not caring” as a detail they loved. Ramsey remarked that the queer episodes in the series did not feel tacked on but were integral to the story.

The Importance Of Queer Storytelling

TLOU Queer Characters

The Last of Us‘ level of queer storytelling matters, not just for the narrative on-screen but also for the industry as a whole. The show’s representation carries weight, given its popularity and exposure. It also underscores the importance of queer storytelling and the need to feature diverse representations of love on-screen.

Ramsey’s journey as Ellie will continue in Season 2, and fans can expect more queer storytelling to get this level of exposure. The Last of Us is currently streaming on HBO Max.
