Marvel Cinematic Universe fans were delighted to see Loki expand on the concept of the Multiverse in advance of Doctor Strange’s arrival. In addition to providing a clearer explanation of how the Multiverse worked, the series also included numerous Easter eggs, one of which was, for the Living Tribunal, a powerful cosmic being from the comics.

Loki’s appearance in the comics was significant because they were responsible for protecting the Multiverse. When Avengers: Infinity War was being planned, the cosmic entity was even supposed to appear to confront Thanos. However, it was ultimately scrapped.

However, the Multiverse of Madness could be the cosmic being’s first proper appearance.

Face-to-Face with the Living Tribunal

New footage from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness shows off America Chavez’s abilities in new scenes that have been released for promotional purposes. Prior to her and Strange’s descent through the Multiverse, the character creates a star-shaped hole, through which one universe stands out.

An image of multiple floating heads covered in a distinctive cloth resembling that of the Living Tribunal appeared.

They resemble the stone statue from Loki, but their eyes glow brightly. No one knows if these are simply conduits for the Living Tribunal, or if the entity itself resides within them as well.

The Living Tribunal can be seen at the the:09 mark in the new promo for Multiverse of Madness.

Who is the “Living Tribunal,” and what is their purpose?

Living Tribunal

In the comics, the Living Tribunal served as a check on the Multiverse, ensuring that no universe grew in power at the expense of others. In the comics, the Living Tribunal doesn’t have any variants because it exists in all universes simultaneously.

Although the Living Tribunal has been killed in comic books before, its simultaneous existence has been a detriment in comics. All universes would be wiped out if one universe were to die.

However, it’s not clear how the Living Tribunal will work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Marvel Studios has been planning to include the cosmic being in a major way for years, as evidenced by the deleted scene of it confronting Thanos in Infinity War, as well as its inclusion as an Easter egg in the Multiverse-focused Loki series.

Doctor Strange star Chiwetel Ejiofor first referred to the cosmic being in 2016 when he was given a magical weapon known as “The Staff of the Living Tribunal.” This is the perfect time for the Living Tribunal to make its MCU debut, as the first person it encountered in the prime universe, Earth-616, was Doctor Strange in the comicsuniverse; Earth-616ltiverse appears to be on the verge of collapsing, and its job is to keep things in check. It may even have to face off against Wanda in the same way it did Thanos.
