The Star Wars universe is always expanding through movies, live-action tv shows, animated shows, and more, But apart from these avenues, comics and books have played an important role in adding more depth to this galaxy located far far away. In fact, there are novelizations of the movies too and these expand on the events of the film. These books also add to the characterization of the characters as well.
It’s undoubtedly true that these novelizations are the reason why many fans appreciate the galaxy of Star Wars so much. However, now it looks like fans won’t get the latest book regarding the Star Wars universe. This is because there are rumours in the air that Disney has cancelled the tie-in novel to their hit Disney+ show The Mandalorian.
Lucasfilm previously announced that there will be tie-in books to their live-action Disney+ series. Now, things did start off smoothly with the Art of Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 1’s book getting released on time in December. However, after that, things got stalled a little. For one, the adult title that was going to be penned by Del Rey has been pushed back to Fall 2021.
However, we fear that Pablo Hidalgo’s The Ultimate Visual Guide will be delivered a worse fate. Ziro.hu is reporting that the Star Wars: The Mandalorian – The Ultimate Visual Guide reference book has been cancelled. The reason for the cancellation is being said to be the “multiple, interconnected series” that are tied to it.
The entire quote from Ziro.hu says the following:
“Our source has new information that explains somewhat the cancellation of the book. The Visual Guide was shut down at the last minute because the multiple, interconnected series coming to Disney+ requires a different strategy. Lucasfilm wants to have more control over the books. According to our source The Mandalorian: The Ultimate Visual Guide – or an updated and changed version – will not be released before 2022.”
Know that these reports are basically just rumors for now. But if these do turn out to be true, then it will absolutely be disappointing. This is because the visual guides are loved by fans since they come with new details about the projects. So had the book been released in time, then fans would be able to know about the world of The Mandalorian. We are sure that with two seasons under its belt, there’s a lot that fans would have loved to know The Mandalorian’s world.
However, it also needs to be considered that the spin-offs of The Mandalorian are massive projects in themselves. So they will surely stretch and fill the world of The Mandalorian in unknown and amazing ways. As such, if the visual guide got released before those shows got even written, then chances are that it will surely contrast some of the details that will subsequently get presented in those shows.
Not to mention, that the book could also end up straight up spoiling things about the upcoming shows, which surely neither Disney or Lucasfilm would want. The biggest threat of this happening lies with The Book of Boba Fett show that’s arriving in December. Just think about how difficult it would be to devote multiple pages to him without spoiling details about the new show.
We think that the delay that is happening is a result of the issue with the visual guides of the sequel trilogy movies. So the company must be looking forward to avoiding those issues with continuity. People who bought the sequel trilogy novelization books know that there was sometimes not enough details presented about the world or even the characters. However, whatever details were given ended up contradicting other movies and projects. Hell, sometimes they got contradicted by the other movies in the sequel trilogy. An example of this is Luke Skywalker’s temple destruction or Snoke’s origins.
Along with this, there are a lot of rumours in the air that the narrative started by The Mandalorian won’t end till at least 2027. So Rangers of the New Republic and Ahsoka are the other two shows that will surely influence the story decisions along with The Book of Boba Fett. Also, we suspect that this is not the end. Lucasfilm will surely be planning to add more spin-offs after the success of The Mandalorian.
Beyond The Book of Boba Fett, we can expect Ahsoka and Rangers of the New Republic to also play a major role in the Mandoverse moving forward. Also, there are surely many more spinoffs shows to come that will add to whatever Lucasfilm’s endgame is.
Now, it does suck that Lucasfilm is withholding information that fans would love, but ultimately it’s the right thing for the Star Wars universe and obviously for The Mandoverse. So for now this is indeed the way as we wait to get more information about the developments of the visual novel.
