The Mandalorian was the hope that Lucasfilm was looking for after the Sequel trilogy was met with less than overwhelming critical appreciation. To make matters worse, Solo: A Star Wars story also bombed at the box office. But The Mandalorian changed it all. It was a commercial hit and was critically appreciated as well.

Not to mention that it gave Disney+ the push it needed at its launch time. In fact, many consider it to be the best Star Wars media after Disney’s Lucasfilm take over.

Right now, the Emmy-nominated series has two seasons under its belt till now and will begin shooting the 3rd season after The Book of Boba Fett finishes its shoot for its 1st season. The series began shooting in spring.

But some outlets are saying that The Mandalorian’s third season has already been in production for some time, while others are saying that no footage has been shot till now as a result of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s ongoing production.

Other sources also add another reason for the delay, and that’s due to lead Pedro Pascal shooting the HBO show, The Last of Us. As such, the question now is- what’s the actual situation of The Mandalorian season 3?

After all, there’s no release date in sight till now. But rumors of a Spring 2022 release are doing the rounds. So if that turns out to be real, then season 3 might begin soon, or it might as well have already begun.

American Cinematographer reports that season 3 of The Mandalorian has officially started production. In a report discussing ILM’s development of The Volume, season 3 of The Mandalorian was mentioned.

The Pascal lead show was mentioned alongside upcoming Disney+ shows like Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Boba of Boba Fett. This was because Lucasfilm was making use of the same technology to shoot those shows in Los Angeles as well. Additionally, it was noted that another StageCraft was being developed for the Pinewood Studios in London, where Andor was under production right now.

Conflicting Reports On The Mandalorian Season 3’s Start

As previously said, there have been multiple conflicting reports on The Mandalorian season 3. Cinelinx’s Jordan Maison, who apparently works for The Mandalorian has said that work has begun for some time. He has also hinted that work is continuing in ways that might even extend beyond that of the third season.

Kessel Run Transmissions also said similar things. Apart from these two, there were other sources as well that suggested parts of season 3 were shot along with The Book of Boba Fett.

But Collider ran an article that suggested The Mandalorian wouldn’t start production till late 2021. The reason behind this was because the Obi-Wan Kenobi show was making use of The Volume in LA.

What’s The Truth?

Note that American Cinematographer is a trusted source, and the others mentioned here are as well. It’s interesting to note that in ASC’s report, it was said that Obi-Wan and Boba Fett will:

“will use the same volume initially built for The Mandalorian”.

This wording makes us think that the outlet got their information a little time ago since it’s known now that The Book of Boba Fett has completed shooting. So keeping this in mind, it’s possible that season 3 of The Mandalorian might be deep into production right now.

The Book of Boba Fett will basically be season 2.5 of The Mandalorian. So if they air season 3 shortly after, like spring of 2022, it will help keep fans engaged in the story.

As for whether it’s possible to shoot season 3 with Pedro Pascal still engaged in shooting another show, then know that Mando’s face is beneath the helmet most of the time.

So production can put on a helmet on another backup actor and begin shooting season 3. In fact, that’s what was done till now. However, even now, there’s a lot of confusion regarding the production start date of The Mandalorian season 3.

But right now, signs do point towards the fact that production is currently underway. So soon, we will get to see Mando on our screens again. But till then, you can catch seasons 1 and 2 of The Mandalorian on Disney+.
