“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” was a one-of-a-kind movie. Not only was the 2018 film one of the finest “Spider-Man” movies ever made but also one of the best movies of the year, but it was an animated feature film that altered the game, kicking in a wave of films willing to experiment with visually stunning aesthetics.
The scenario has changed dramatically. There was a lot of buzz about the first “Spider-Verse” picture, but it was less than for past “Spider-Man” theatrical releases because it was about a more modern, lesser-known iteration of Spider-Man. That is no longer the case with “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
The latest trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has hit the internet, and as a diehard Spider-Man fan, we couldn’t be more thrilled for its release next year.
The Opening
The trailer begins with Miles looking towards the New York skyline, only to be joined by his mother, Rio Morales. Rio comments on how she’s experiencing her boy grow into a young man.
The first “Spider-Verse” was heavily focused on Miles’ relationship with his dad, Jefferson, and Miles’ conflict with his father’s wishes. This is largely true in the comics as well, which tend to emphasize the father-son bond while putting Miles’ mother, Rio, on the sidelines, except for sad times.
Rio approaches Miles and speaks to him regarding how hard she and her husband fought to ensure their little boy felt appreciated and valued, as well as her concern that her grown little man will be surrounded by peers and friends who will not look after him as his parents did.
Into The Spider-Verse Flashbacks
Much of the trailer returns to key events from Into the Spider-Verse, reminding us of his progress towards becoming his individual Spider-Man. We see a cameo by Stan Lee from the first movie, the upside-down jump, Peter B. Parker training Miles, Miles’ first swing as Spider-Man, and many more sequences.
It’s a good idea to have a taste of the first movie before diving into the sequel.
The Friendly Neighbor Hood Spider-Man
Some actual new Across footage of Miles doing his acrobatics, swinging and thwiping webs to save a falling taxi, swinging around the city, being that friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, looking out for that smaller guy, and protecting the streets of New York.
Gwen Stacy Is Back
Miles is in his bedroom when one of the multiversal gateways is opened by Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) to meet her new pal. While it’s shortened here to transport Miles and Gwen into the multiverse, the first teaser from the movie last year featured a longer version of this scene in which Gwen reads from Miles’ diary and Miles tells her that he’s been grounded by his parents before teasing Spider-Man to go out instead.
The Spider-Verse
Gwen and Miles suddenly discovered themselves in a hub infested with Spider-Men. Some are instantly recognisable, while others were made just for Across the Spider-Verse, with several backdrop costumes made by comic artist Kris Anka.
The trailer for “Across the Spider-Verse” delivers fans exactly what they want: shot after shot of various Spider-People, with a plethora of appearances for fans to concentrate on, inspect, and analyze. There are so many versions dressed up that you’ll have to watch the movie several times to figure out who is who.
Some of the more interesting ones are Bag-Man Spider-Man, Spider-Cop, Werewolf Spider-Man, Spider-Man India and, maybe most excitingly, Spider-Man from the PS4 game voiced by Yuri Lowenthal.
Peter B. Parker
Miles’ exhausted mentor from the first film, Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), is back. Peter appears to have reconnected with Mary-Jane in his universe, since he’s carrying along a baby carrier and a comfortable-looking bathrobe.
Although we don’t see the baby in the trailer, producer Chris Miller confirmed that Parker has become a father. “Peter remarried Mary Jane, and they had a baby girl named May Day. “She is half spider, half human.” During an online event following the trailer’s premiere, the producer stated
The Upside Down Sitting
We transition to a scene of Gwen and Miles hanging out, rather literally considering gravity’s impact on Gwen’s hair. It’s presumably Miles’ world, and it’s from their ground-breaking short adventure shown in the previous trailer.
Jessica Drew The Spider-Woman
We shift to another Spider-hero riding a motorcycle out of a multiverse rift and directly into the Vulture.
She’s wearing a biker outfit and boots and appears to have completely different abilities, as the Spider-Woman of Earth-616 never featured spider powers like the ones shown here.
Miguel O’Hara Aka Spider-Man 2099
Gwen tries to remind Miguel that she believed they were supposed to be the good guys, indicating a conflict of beliefs. Given how upset Miguel appears in the trailer and how aggressively he hunts Miles, it is possible that Miguel does not agree with Miles at some point in the movie.
Miguel watches a hologram recording titled “Gabriella 011,” which reveals an adult Miguel in possibly his home city of high-tech New York, playing with what is most certainly his own daughter.
Spider-Men Vs Spider-Men
The movie will revolve around a team of Spider-People tasked with ensuring the multiverse’s survival. According to the movie’s creators, Gwen is recruited to this team but Miles is not, which is expected to generate some conflict.
And whatever Miles objects to appears to make him an opponent of the Spider-Verse, as he is surrounded by Spider-Men as he attempts to swing through the vortex.
