Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson is all set to carry forward the torch of Captain America and his shield with his first solo outing – Captain America: New World Order (referred hereon as “Cap 4”), in 2024. The movie is the fourth installment in Captain America’s franchise in the MCU. However, it has recently been officially confirmed by Marvel that there is gonna be a new Falcon who would accompany our new Cap in his adventures. Let’s peep into the news.

Who is this new Falcon?

Sam handed over the falcon wings to Torres

Sam Wilson may be leaving behind his old persona of The Falcon, the sidekick of Steve Roger’s Captain America from Cap 4 onwards. The events in Disney+’s The Falcon And The Winter Soldier (TFATWS), showed his struggle in accepting this heavy mantle. However, by the end of the series, he finally does and dorns a new Captain America suit. The series ended with Wilson passing down his old suit to Torres, having no need for it after becoming the new Captain America. After Torres gives an inspiring speech, Wilson picks up his newly acquired shield and leaves behind his mechanical wing suit, marking his full transformation into his new identity and allowing Torres to become the Falcon.

Talking with Screen Rant, Cap 4 director Julius Onah said –

I’m thrilled, you know, Danny Ramirez, who’s playing Falcon, he and I go back a bit, so and Anthony’s somebody I’ve been a huge, huge fan of as well. So getting to work with them, first of all, director to actor, and then being able to shape these characters, and take the relationship forward is incredible. And their relationship is one of my favorite ones in this movie it really helps form the emotional core of how Sam has to define himself as Captain America, because he loves this guy. They are both soldiers, they’re brothers, and their journey, I think, is going to be something that really resonates with audiences.

Danny Ramirez, who is currently swimming with his success in Top Gun: Maverick recently, is also thrilled by this news. Ramirez even in a separate interview teased his transition to being Falcon, only hinting at the idea that anything could happen in this universe.

Torres’ Falcon in the Marvel comics

The character for the first time appeared as Falcon in Captain America: Sam Wilson #6 (2016). Since then, Joaquin Torres has helped Sam in his many death-challenging adventures. In the comics, Joaquín Torres came to the United States of America with his mother and grandmother when he was six years old. He lived in Sonoita, Arizona, and graduated from there only. He was a kind-hearted fellow until he was kidnapped by the Sons of the Serpent, for genetic experimentation.

As a result of the experiment, he was turned into a falcon/human hybrid using Cap’s avian partner, Redwing. Eventually, Cap rescues him. Moving on, Joaquin then decides to help Cap in bringing down the Serpent Society. Thereon, Joaquín decides to become Captain America’s sidekick and as a result, he assumes the mantle of the Falcon. In the comics, Falcon not only has the ability of flight, but he also has a high regenerative healing factor and also has a psychic link with the Redwing.

In Cap 4, Ramirez along with Sam Wilson shall be joined by TFATWS alumni Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley and new character Shira Haas as Sabra, an Israeli hero new to the MCU. They will reportedly face off against 2008’s Incredible Hulk’s antagonist – The Leader (played by Blake Nelson). Other than our knowledge of Joaquin’s character from TFATWS, we don’t have any other knowledge. It all is a mystery (as Kevin Feige probably likes it to be at the moment). However, there is plenty of development still in store for the Air Force lieutenant in the MCU. The excitement level is hyping up for 2024’s release and fans can not be more impatient. Julius Onah is set to direct the film, having previously helmed The Cloverfield Paradox and Luce. Until next time, Peace off!
