During the events of San Diego Comic-Con, Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson was confirmed to return to the MCU. Kevin Feige announced his involvement in Captain America: New World Order. The movie is set to release in 2024. It will be the penultimate movie of MCU’s Phase 5. Ever since then, news regarding the movie has been scarce. The last bit of information that fans received was the fact that Julius Onah was to take up the mantle of directing Captain America: New World Order. This would be a transfer of responsibility from Joe and Anthony Russo. Of course, as seen in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson overcame his apprehensions. He embraced the responsibility of becoming the new Captain America. Other details regarding the rest of the cast and the storyline have been kept under wraps. However, the main villain has now been announced to be The Leader.

The last villain that Sam Wilson fought along with Bucky Barnes was the Flag Smashers. However, the new villain has now been revealed. It was confirmed by none other than Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. During Marvel Studios’ panel at the D23 Fan Expo 2022 it was announced that The Leader, played by Tim Blake Nelson will be the main villain. The Leader has not been seen in the franchise ever since The Incredible Hulk in 2008. This will be the actor’s second appearance in the MCU. He attended the event and even expressed his gratitude. “I’m delighted, Marvel is part of cinema history, and that I get to be a part of that is an absolute honor.”

The cast will also include Carl Lumbley (Isaiah Bradley) and Danny Ramirez (Joaquin Torres). They too appeared in the event. Julius Onah also had a lot to say about The Leader. “Let’s just say, one of the things that really drew me to this project is the Leader is a man who operates from intellect. And it’s so great to have an adversary who is working with this incredible intellect to really put Sam through the wringer in this story. And, again, it’s a paranoid thriller, it’s this grounded adventure where I think everything that happens in this film feels so real and intense because of who this adversary is. So, back to that other question of yours, what he’s going to have to go through in this film is because he’s got an adversary who is so terrifyingly intelligent.”

Tim Blake Nelson’s previous role in the MCU

He had played a small yet important role in The Incredible Hulk. He portrayed Dr. Samuel Sterns who was an integral part of Emil Blonsky’s transformation into the Abomination. The scene had ended with a few drops of Bruce Banner’s blood dropping into Dr. Sterns’ open wound on his head. He immediately grinned and formulated his plans for the future. However, ever since he has not appeared in the MCU. Rest be assured he will be a formidable villain to Sam Wilson’s Captain America. It will also explore what Sterns has been up to for more than a decade.
