One of the most impressive things about Henry Cavill’s performance as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher is the way he was able to modulate his voice to make it sound like Geralt’s. In short, the voice captures Geralt’s essence and it’s pretty similar to the one we have heard in The Witcher video games.

Of course, it’s not a copy of Doug Cockle’s voice, but it’s certainly inspired by it and thankfully, it works in the show well. But we have always wondered how Cavill was able to figure out just what kind of voice would be perfect for his version of Geralt. So, During WitcherCon, Cavill surprised all of us by saying that Geralt’s tough voice almost didn’t happen.

Henry Cavill Reveals Accidental Mistake That Gave Rise To Geralt’s Voice

In a WitcherCon interview, Henry Cavill said that during auditions, he asked Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, the showrunner if he should make his voice a little raspy for Geralt. But the showrunner told him to just do his own natural voice. In response, Cavill said, “I was like, okay. Okay, cool.”

But when he was filming a scene between King Foltest and Geralt in the third episode of the show, Cavill forgot to stick to his own voice. He says:

“I didn’t do that intentionally. That happened by accident. And then afterwards I was like, ‘Oh my god, I just played a whole scene in the wrong voice’.”

But afterwards, Cavill said that he liked the take on Geralt’s voice and said that using that kind of voice “made a lot of things sit better when it came to delivery of certain lines, and delivery of certain dialogue.”

What About The Similarities And Comparisons With Doug Cockle’s Voice?

As for the similarities with Doug Cockle’s voice, Cavill had this to say:

“That was definitely a concern. I don’t want to seem like I’m plagiarizing another professional’s extraordinary work. I had a look at it, had a listen to it, and I thought, actually they are different enough. It’s clearly inspired by—but I did my own thing, and then I spoke to Alec and I spoke to Lauren, and they both said, ‘It’s okay, actually, if you want to do that, we can go with that, and we’ll redo the rest.”

Henry said that the production team had to do some reshoots anyways so getting Geralt’s natural voice throughout the entire season wasn’t that much of a big deal. Interestingly, he also said that it wasn’t difficult to maintain that raspy gravelly voice.

He said:

“It sounds like it is, but it’s about just finding that—in season 1 I was still trying to find it, and you can definitely tell when I have. But in season 2, it’s not difficult to do at all. It’s actually quite easy.”

You can hear more of Henry’s voice as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher season 2 which is set to drop on December 17 on Netflix.
