Henry Cavill announcing that he was leaving The Witcher and handing over the swords to Liam Hemsworth was a major blow to the fandom. In the event of his resignation, various theories began circulating on the reason behind his departure. And now we finally know why. And it’s not Superman.

Here’s Why Henry Cavill Left The Witcher

Henry Cavill has repeatedly said he’s a massive fan of The Witcher franchise. From the books to the games, he loves it all. As such, it was surprising to read about his exit from the show that was based on the novels he loved.

But there’s a reason behind his exit. As per Redanian Intelligence (RI), it’s due to disagreements with the producers of the show regarding the direction of his character and the general content of the show. RI says:

“Henry Cavill was considering leaving the series after Season 2 because he and the producers ‘weren’t seeing eye to eye’ regarding content and Geralt’s role in The Witcher.”

It’s interesting to note that Cavill’s slowly growing discontent was present from season 2 and evident during the press tour as well. He mentioned several times that he was trying to find a balance between the vision of the writers and the novel series.

Obviously, he felt he hadn’t found that balance and decided to depart even though not long ago, there were reports that he was committed to seeing the series through as Geralt of Rivia. And there was also news of his contract getting upped to $1 million per episode from the $400k he was getting paid.

But his departure has been a long time in the making. Deadline reported that Henry Cavill had opted for a short-term contract as he felt it was time to depart the show after three seasons. So it seems like he couldn’t bring about any changes to his character or the show and decided to leave.

Did Him Playing Superman Again Affect His Witcher Commitments?

After Henry Cavill returned in Black Adam as Superman, The Hollywood Reporter remarked that a Superman movie was in the works. But there wasn’t a director or writer attached to it. So it’s a skeleton for now, and it’s possible that a movie of this scale won’t shoot soon. But that isn’t the case for The Witcher season 4. It is being written and could begin shooting in 2023.

So scheduling conflicts likely wouldn’t have affected his contract with The Witcher. Also, Cavill was quoted saying in an interview by GamesRadar+ that he could manage two projects in the same year. So, there wouldn’t have been any problems juggling the two, at least in Cavill’s mind.

So it wouldn’t be a misstep to conclude that Henry Cavill’s reason behind leaving The Witcher were issues with the direction of the show rather than any conflict with Superman.
