When Venom: Let There Be Carnage hit theatres on October 1, fans were treated to a game-changing but also incredibly perplexing end credits sequence that appeared to usher Eddie Brock and Venom into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). And now, courtesy to Spider-Man: No Way Home’s mid-credits scene, we have an explanation for what happened there, as well as a (mostly) clean wrap-up that leaves things open for the future.

Venom In MCU

Spoilers ahead, but in Let There Be Carnage, Eddie is resting on a bed in a run-down motel in Mexico after his epic/really strange battle with Carnage (Woody Harrelson). The Venom symbiote informs Eddie that he is linked to a hive mind with a massive array of information that includes the multiverse and that giving Eddie complete access would shatter his brain. Instead, he offers to show him a glimpse of his expertise…

Instead, they were shot into another universe. The same situation, the new hotel room, with the Venom symbiote swearing, didn’t do it. And on the TV is footage from the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home with J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) unveiling Spider-Man (Tom Holland) as Peter Parker to the entire world. When Eddie Venom wakes up, the symbiote licks the TV screen and says, “That guy.”

There’s a little more to the scene where Eddie discovers he’s in someone else’s hotel room. Still, aside from presumably introducing Venom into the MCU, there’s that perplexing bit about accessing the hive mind, which hinted that this might be a vision Eddie was having, even if Venom swore it wasn’t. It turns out that it wasn’t a vision after all. Eddie did bloop into the MCU, though briefly.

We cut in on Eddie, who was inebriated at the hotel bar, during the mid-credits scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He’s bothering a poor bartender in an attempt to explain the MCU to him because he comes from reality without superheroes. Isn’t it perplexing? The simple reason is that, while Sony, Spider-Man produce the Venom films, Marvel and Sony produce No Way Home, resulting in two distinct universes. The character, Spider-Man, has been shared with Marvel and Disney since Captain America: Civil War and may continue beyond No Way Home. That means Holland’s Spidey will remain in the MCU. What about Venom? We’ll get there in a moment.

thanos

Eddie emphasizes that aliens ” enjoy eating brains after being asked about the vast purple alien who likes stones (that would be Thanos, by the way). Eddie emphasizes that aliens “enjoy eating brains.”

Angrily, the bartender tells Eddie that Thanos forced his family to disappear for five years, referencing the MCU incident known as “The Blip,” which seems to calm Eddie down slightly. It also helps him set up a major confrontation when he adds, “Perhaps I should go to New York and speak to this… Spider-Man.”

But it’s not meant to be. A bright light surrounds Eddie and brings him back to his home universe, just as the Venom symbiote tries to persuade him to go skinny-dipping instead. This explains how Venom got there in the first place… In a way. Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) casts a spell in No Way Home that mistakenly drags adversaries from prior Spider-Man films into the MCU. The stipulation is that they must be aware that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, which means we have a slew of villains from both the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield films.

Lizard 2

Fans of the comics may have noticed that only five of them appeared in the film: Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Lizard (Rhys Ifans), and Sandman (Thomas Haden Church). They are five-sixths of a group known as The Sinister Six in the literature. It turns out that there was a sixth villain sucked through, and his name was Venom… He did not get in New York in time to confront the wall-crawler.

How Venom knows Peter Parker

venom

To explain how Venom knew who Peter Parker was, you can probably wiggle that in by claiming that the symbiote was aware of the multiverse and so had that information from his hive mind. And there’s the fact that Spider-Man 3 included Venom (Topher Grace), who is introduced casually during the film by Tobey Maguire’s Peter. So, if that symbiote was part of the multiversal hive mind and knew Peter Parker was Spider-Man, then Tom Hardy’s Venom symbiote does as well.

Anyway, Eddie/Venom has left the MCU too. I don’t know, tussle with Morbius (Jared Leto) or something. But he does leave something behind: a symbiote on the bar, which extends one small tentacle before the screen goes black. What does this imply? TBD, but the Venom symbiote is now officially in the MCU, which means Sony can have their Venom movies, and the MCU can have a little Venom as a gift. It remains to be seen whether the symbiote will connect to Holland’s Spider-Man, if Tom Hardy will take over the job in the MCU, or if someone else will acquire their goop suit.
