As hinted at in Thor: Ragnarok, Doctor Strange and the Masters of the Mystic Arts don’t necessarily require the Time Stone to see into the future. That which was most valuable to the Ancient One lay within Agamotto’s Eye: The Time Stone. She used it to foresee the future, spotting and destroying potential threats before they could arise.

Before her death, she told Doctor Strange, “I’ve spent so many years peering through time.” Furthermore, before her death, she told Doctor Strange that she was “looking at this exact moment. But I can’t see past it. I’ve prevented countless terrible futures. And after each one, there’s always another. And they all led here, but never further”. Another way to predict the future may have been hinted at in Thor 3: Ragnarok. This was Thor’s third solo feature film outing.

Avengers: Infinity War showed Doctor Strange using the Time Stone in a similar fashion as Thanos in the film. Time Stone was blown up by a fear that someone else could use it to reverse his genocidal actions in Avengers: Endgame. Because the Mystic Arts Masters have lost their most potent weapon, the world is more vulnerable than it has ever been. As a result, recent magical crises, such as Wanda Maximoff’s actions in Westview during WandaVision, might not have elicited a response from the Masters.

Nevertheless, it is conceivable that the Mystic Arts Masters still possess the power to predict the future. After being exiled from Asgard, Odin returns to planet Earth in Thor: Ragnarok. Even though Loki is surprised to learn that Odin’s old nursing home is now gone, Thor is understandably displeased. It was Loki’s furious objection that sparked the conversation. “I can’t see into the future. I’m not a witch”. This is insightful as it shows that some magic allows witches and sorcerers to see into the future. Furthermore, it is highly probable that these spells were contained in Kamar-Taj’s Book of Cagliostro. It also contained the secrets of the Time Stone, as well as lessons in temporal manipulation.

Cagliostro was an 18th-century occultist who was known for his psychic healing, alchemy, and scrying in the real world. As a time-traveling sorcerer in Marvel Comics, he’s been adapted to the MCU in a similar fashion. All of this points to the possibility that Doctor Strange can still travel through time using more traditional MCU magic.

Will Loki Be Affected?

By now fans know that Loki was the one who set off the multiverse in the MCU. As a reason, the interesting question is whether Loki has had any effect on these spells. The Masters of the Mystic Arts may have been weakened by the fact that they now face an infinite number of timelines that stretch back to the beginning of time.

A more likely scenario: Doctor Strange and his fellow sorcerers will have access to all of the multiverse’s realms. This will make them even more potent than before. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the upcoming sequel, is expected to provide some answers. The clues in Thor: Ragnarok indicate that some characters in the MCU are still capable of traveling back in time.
