“I was concerned they wouldn’t get the same chemistry”: Tobey Maguire Fought Through Kirsten Dunst Break-Up to Deliver $789M Spider-Man 2 That Revolutionized Superhero Genre

Here’s an interesting tidbit- all three major live-action Spidermen have dated the actresses who played their love interests in real-life. This unintentional trend was undoubtedly started by Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst who reportedly began dating during the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man film.

But the director wasn’t really happy about their relationship. He wasn’t concerned about the personal lives of his actors, just about how it would affect his films. After all, even though Dunst and Maguire dated, they also broke up after only a year, and that made Raimi deal with another headache.

Chemistry On-Screen: Personal Break-Up Doesn’t Affect Spider-Man 2

Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst began dating on the set of the first Spider-Man film but broke up before the second one got made. Director Sam Raimi was naturally concerned that the breakup would affect their chemistry in the film. After all, if they failed to sell Peter Parker and Mary Jane’s relationship on-screen, it could affect the reviews and box-office collection of the movie.

In a 2007 interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Raimi said: “They apparently began dating with each other, I think, in the middle of the first movie … but definitely they eventually broke up before the second movie. I was concerned they wouldn’t get the same chemistry back, but it was just me worrying.”

Thankfully, the two actors didn’t have a bitter breakup and instead, as per reports, continued to remain friends. Also, as true professionals, they didn’t allow their personal relationship status to affect how they portrayed the relationship of their characters on-screen.

So neither reviews nor the box office results were affected by the breakup. Spider-Man 2 grossed $789 million worldwide and still has a 93% Rotten Tomatoes critics score and 82% audience score.

Kirsten Dunst’s Views On The Rebooted Spider-Man Franchise

When MCU put out Spider-Man: Homecoming, Kirsten Dunst didn’t have anything too positive to say about it. In a 2017 Marie Claire interview, the actress was asked how she felt about the reboot and the star said that she doesn’t care. Dunst said: “We made the best ones, so who cares? I’m like, ‘You make it all you want.’ They’re just milking that cow for money. It’s so obvious. You know what I mean?”

The Power of the Dog star further said in a Variety interview that the Spider-Man films made by Sam Raimi were loved by all and she’d “rather be in the first ones than the new ones.” The star also wished that the fourth Raimi Spider-Man film got made.

While the possibility of that happening is slim, there’s speculation that Maguire will appear in the MCU down the line. It remains to be seen when that happens.
