Tom Cruise is currently preparing for the release of Mission Impossible 7, the first part of a two-piece finale to the franchise he has been leading for the past 27 years. However, there seems to be some dissatisfaction brewing regarding the film’s theater placement.

According to Puck News analyst Matthew Belloni’s recent newsletter, Tom Cruise is reportedly quite upset with where Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One stands in the theatrical pecking order. The report states that when the movie premieres on July 12, it is scheduled to play on the majority of North American IMAX screens. However, just nine days later, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer will debut and secure all IMAX screens for three full weeks until mid-August. This decision severely limits Mission Impossible 7’s theater capacity starting from its second weekend.

Cruise is said to be “pretty pissed [off]” about the situation and is actively trying to convince exhibitors to prioritize his film over Oppenheimer on certain non-IMAX premium screens. His frustration stems from the belief that he is not receiving the treatment he deserves, especially after the success of Top Gun: Maverick, which was credited with “saving” theaters when it premiered in May 2022 and grossed $1.5 billion at the box office. Out of that total, $110 million came from IMAX theaters. Cruise is expressing “extreme displeasure” at IMAX’s refusal to adjust their plans for his next Mission: Impossible installment.

Will Tom Cruise’s Intensity Benefit Mission Impossible 7?

Tom Cruise is renowned for his intensity and passion as a performer, evident in his willingness to tackle challenging material on screen. His dedication to his films’ releases, as exemplified by the Top Gun: Maverick theatrical saga, is also well-known.

The question now is whether Cruise’s vocal opposition to Mission Impossible 7’s time on IMAX screens will ultimately help the sequel at the box office. The previous three Mission Impossible films achieved box office totals ranging from $688 million to $787 million, falling short of the $800 million mark. While Cruise’s passion and intensity are commendable, the film faces tough competition from movies like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Barbie, and Oppenheimer, all scheduled to be released around the same time.

Challenging Box Office Prospects Amidst Stiff Competition

Mission Impossible 7’s box office prospects are likely to face significant challenges due to the intense competition during its release period. Alongside the film’s premiere, other highly anticipated movies like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Barbie, and Oppenheimer are set to captivate audiences.

With the previous Mission Impossible films struggling to surpass $800 million in box office earnings, the task of attracting audiences to the theater becomes more daunting. Despite Tom Cruise’s star power and commitment to his craft, the simultaneous release of these high-profile films may hinder Mission Impossible 7’s chances of achieving blockbuster success.

In conclusion, Tom Cruise’s discontent with Mission Impossible 7’s theater placement, coupled with the stiff competition it faces at the box office, raises uncertainties about the film’s performance. While Cruise’s dedication and intensity are admirable, only time will tell
