Released on 16 December 2021, Spider-Man: No Way Home is still running hot in the theatres. It is one of the most successful MCU films has ever made. Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland were all part of the project – three generations of Spider-Man. Watching No Way Home in the theatres on the first night reminded fans of the craze at the time of Avengers: Endgame. Three Spider-Men versus Five villains was just the perfect recipe for a blockbuster.

The film deserves a round of applause for how it handled the emotional dimensions of the narrative. It has some of the most tear-jerking scenes in the MCU, like the death of Aunt May. Throughout his promotion of the project, Tom Holland called attention to this angle more than a few times. It’s an angle Sony liked little.

Sony Had Problems With Tom’s Promotion

Tom Holland recently had an interview with The Hollywood Reporter for his upcoming film Uncharted. In the interview, he confessed Sony was very bittersweet about his promotion of the film. Because of Holland’s comments about the movie’s ‘emotional‘ elements, Sony’s marketing team called him. Holland then had to ‘sort of change track‘ on how the movie was being promoted.

“It’s funny, I actually got in trouble on the press tour. I got a phone call from some people at the studio, saying, ‘Stop saying the movie is brutal! Stop saying the movie is emotional! It doesn’t sell the movie!’ And I was like, ‘But it is! This is the most emotional superhero movie that’s ever been made.’ And they were like, ‘We want people to understand how fun it is.’ And I was like, ‘It is fun, but it’s also kind of heartbreaking.’ So I had to sort of change track on how I was promoting the movie, but I’m glad I gave at least some people some warning.”

Holland Was Not Lying To Fans

Sony is ridiculous to find an issue with Tom Holland promoting the film in such a way since those aspects of the film received the most praise. The new film is indeed emotional and intense. He wasn’t lying when he told the fans that. Despite its fun nature, the film’s core contained many super-emotional elements. Fans really appreciated Holland’s comments before the movie, about how brutal and emotional the experience would be.

In order to try and get the biggest turnout possible, the studios naturally played it asto as possible. Even with Holland’s remarks, it’s clear that the film performed exceptionally. It’s hard to imagine how Sony was disappointed with that.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is still in the theatres worldwide and it does not seem to slow down soon.
