Having abilities and becoming a superhero comes with a lot of responsibility. Such a burden can drive even the most virtuous and well-meaning superhero into obscurity. Where a life as a villain sounds much better than a life as a hero.

Given Marvel Comics’ long history of making some of the most motivated and mighty heroes to ever grace the comic book universe, it’s no coincidence that many of their long-running superheroes have succumbed to the might of their position. They occasionally turn to the good side and make amends, but not always.
Not all heroes can maintain their integrity and vigilance. They occasionally stumble and give in to the darkness.

Here is a list of Marvel superheroes who have turned evil.

10. Hank Pym

Hank and his wife Janet served as heroes in the Avengers. Tragically, after being suspended, Hank suffered a mental breakdown. He was going to release a robot to strike the Avengers and “rescue” them after that.

When Janet found out, she urged him not to do it, but he pushed her away. Hank eventually turns back into a hero, but it’s still disturbing to see how sinister he can be. In the Ultimate Marvel comics, he showed a more violent side, ordering his ants to attack Janet after shrinking her to wasp size.

9. Jean Grey

The X-Men squad was once trapped in a solar storm, including Jean Grey. In the course of saving her teammates and herself, Jean acquired extremely strong pyromantic abilities. Her teammates believed that no one should have such power, but Jean was persuaded to join the Hellfire Club, a group of villains. The group persuaded Jean that the X-Men couldn’t handle her strength and that they were controlling her.

She finally changed from a hero to a villain because the Hellfire Club was able to convince one of the most intelligent beings in the world that she was too good to be a hero.

8. Hulk

Maestro is a future version of the Hulk who, due to a nuclear war one hundred years in the future, consumed too much radiation, which increased his power and drove him insane while preserving his intellect. With his newly acquired power, Maestro took charge of the future and established a dictatorial reign over everyone who had survived, with almost no one remaining to challenge him.

7. The Winter Soldier

The comic book version of Bucky Barnes, like his MCU counterpart, was transformed into a mercenary after appearing to die while working with Captain America on a mission. He was indeed kidnapped and brainwashed. Being able to face off against his best buddy allowed him to be one of the most lethal villains when Bucky made his comeback as the Winter Soldier.

He was once a villain, but he is now on the positive side. But Bucky’s stint as a supervillain was dark enough to follow him even now, and he continues to be one of the best examples of a Marvel hero who, if only briefly, turned evil.

6. The Punisher

Castle has occasionally played the role of a hero killer, but usually focuses on executing his own version of justice on the mob, mercenaries, criminals, and anyone stupid enough to be involved in the murder of his family. At one point, he murdered Spider-Man in a dark alley, just like so many mob bosses. Even worse, Castle, who has always looked up to Captain America, killed the superhero.

5. Adam Warlock

Adam is a hero with an evil side who goes by the name of Magus. In reality, Magus is a future version of Adam who lost his mind after consuming the soul stone. Adam struggles to stay on the side of good, although he is horrified by what Magus did in the future and tries to act morally.

He has fought and defeated Magus several times, but Magus always finds a way to win. Adam’s dark and evil side, Magus, will always be an aspect of him as long as he is alive.

4. Black Widow

Black Widow has also always traversed the line between right and wrong, yet she has committed some terrible crimes that come easily to her. She killed Jarvis and tricked Tony Stark into getting engaged. She killed Hawkeye’s family and, to make matters worse, blamed Captain America.

To ensure there were no witnesses, she even killed Marina’s cat after being ordered to kill her closest friend. Even when she is on the right side, she still has questionable morality.

3. Reed Richards

While Reed Richards has maintained a heroic image in the main Marvel Universe, Reed was put to the test and found to be flawed in the Ultimate Marvel Universe.

In The Ultimates, where he later assumed the identity of the Maker after emerging from the Negative Zone, Reed Richards assumed the personality of a mad scientist with enhanced intelligence as a result of his enlarged brain. He developed “The City and the Children of Tomorrow,” a race of superhuman beings that later conquered not only Asgard but the entire planet. Then, believing he could improve it, he established himself as the ruler of Earth.

2. Spider-Man

In the “What If” series Spider-Man: Spider’s Shadow, Peter Parker never made the decision to get rid of the alien symbiote that made up his black costume and entered into a bond with Eddie Brock to become Venom. In the reality of Spider’s Shadow, his connection to the symbiote grew stronger and stronger until it finally overcame him.

Peter took on a darker side and became increasingly brutal, mercilessly slaughtering his villains. Before the symbiote was destroyed and he could resume his heroic existence, Peter Parker’s longtime friends turned on him, and the symbiote took control of other heroes to regain his control.

1. Captain America

Captain America was for a while the most morally perfect superhero in the Marvel universe. He was the Avengers’ equivalent of a boy scout, always doing what was right while upholding his own principles and ideas. Captain America was a straightforward individual who only wanted to defend and save the nation.

During the Secret Empire storyline, Marvel made the decision to surprise the audience. It was determined that Steve had been influenced by the Hydra Supreme and had turned into a Hydra agent. By the end of the narrative, Captain America makes the observation that nobody, not even superheroes, should have complete faith in one another.

For Marvel fans, hearing Captain America, the personification of everything admirable about superheroes, say “Hail Hydra,” was an unexpected and heartbreaking moment.
