As per The Hollywood Reporter, Emmy award winning Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) is attached to the Amazon Tomb Raider adaptation and will be writing scripts for it. The site says that Waller-Bridge isn’t planning on starring in the show, but she will be executive producing it.

Lara Croft has a rich adaptation history. Angelina Jolie starred in the 2010 movie adaptation while Alicia Vikander starred in the 2018 film, but a sequel to the movie wasn’t greenlit. Apart from this. actresses like Minnie Driver, Camila Luddington, and Keeley Hawes have portrayed her in multiple video games.

Already, many movie insiders are claiming that this is a sign of video game adaptations becoming the norm after Hollywood failed to do a proper video game based movie or show for decades.

However, it’s too early to make long term assumptions. After all, Lara Croft is a famous character and a part of the pop culture, so making a show on her isn’t pathbreaking.

However, since Waller-Bridge is attached to the project so there’s hope that the show will be better than the Tomb Raider live-action or animated adaptations that have come before.

Also, with stars like Henry Cavill adapting Warhammer 40K, and the recent success of “The Last of Us” could mean that a golden era of video game movies and shows could be near.

Whether that actually happens or remains a dream like it has for decades, remains to be seen.

Stay tuned for more updates.
