Wakanda Forever Writer Tells That M’Baku And Nakia Were Considered For Replacing T’Challa
Since “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” has been in theatres for more than a week, everyone is aware that Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, succeeds T’Challa as the new Black Panther after T’Challa’s passing. But when the “Wakanda Forever” script had to be revised after Chadwick Boseman’s passing, Shuri’s appearance as the iconic warrior wasn’t a given. Other characters were taken into consideration in the writers’ room as possible Black Panther replacements, according to screenwriter Joe Robert Cole, who revealed this in an interview.
Although Wright is ultimately Wakanda’s new protector, Joe Robert Cole, who co-wrote the sequel with director Ryan Coogler, revealed that other names were considered to take on the mantle, including Winston Duke, who plays M’Baku, and Lupita Nyong’o, who plays Nakia, in an interview with Rolling Stone.
Cole said, “We would discuss the concepts and try to predict where the story goes and what decision would have the greatest impact—what would be the ideal journey? And in terms of those characters, where do you go after the movie? M’Baku was undoubtedly someone who suffered some minor injuries. I believe you’re right since Shuri is Black Panther in the comics, and I guess the best way to describe how she became Panther was naturally organic. However, you test-drive a variety of concepts. You simply want to choose wisely and act in the narrative’s best interest”.
When an interviewer mentioned that Lupita Nyong’o’s character, Nakia, would have been an excellent successor, Cole responded, “That got kicked around! Sure enough, her name was mentioned a lot.
Even though Boseman’s passing required a large portion of the script to be revised, the revelation that T’Challa had a child remained a constant in the narrative.
According to Cole, the desire to have a kid with him has always been present. After he passed away, we simply weren’t sure how to effectively incorporate him. Accordingly, his son appeared in our new story in a number of different variations. Finally, the reveal at the conclusion was decided upon.
The fact that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has already surpassed $500 million at the global box office proves that viewers and critics alike believe that Shuri was the perfect pick.
