For years we have heard that Marvel and DC are in a stiff competition with each other. The fan wars online are certainly an indication of that. But trade pundits always knew that DC still hadn’t reached its full potential. However, this time new WBD CEO David Zaslav, along with his appointed DCU CEO’s James Gunn and Peter Safran, want to change that. How? By making it more like Marvel.

David Zaslav Comments On DCU’s Future

As per The Hollywood Reporter, David Zaslav has this to say about the DCU that they are building out:

“I think over the next few years, you’re going to see a lot of growth and opportunity around DC, there’s not going to be four Batmans. And so part of our strategy is drive the hell out of DC, which James and Peter are going to do. I think they’ve thrilled the fans. I think they’re going to thrill you over a period of time.”

His words, “there’s not going to be four Batmans” in the DCU going forward is especially interesting. This is because it seems like he is aiming for a Marvel-like streamlined universe with DCU where there’s only one version of a character.

As for MCU’s multiverse, it’s something that Marvel has only recently begun exploring. That isn’t similar to DC’s current haphazard situation where it isn’t clear which version is the original one and which one is part of the Multiverse. As such, it’s a great idea to first streamline the DCU.

Which Batman Will Be The Main DC Batman?

DC released The Batman by Matt Reeves, starring Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader this year. So he’s the current DCU Batman. But there have been rumours that Matt Reeves doesn’t want his Batman universe to be merged with the mainline DCU that Zaslav is planning.

In the meantime, Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck are both reprising their Dark Knight roles in the upcoming The Flash movie. So they are contenders for becoming the leading Batman of the DCU as well. But if you ask us, we think that even though Keaton and Affleck have played iconic versions of the character, but Zaslav might ultimately choose a younger Batman.

David Zaslav further said that:

“Disney did a wonderful job with Marvel. But if you looked at Marvel and DC ten years ago, you would have said DC is as good or better. But Marvel is a connected universe. It has a ‘bible.’ The key was having one person following everything. All of Marvel is one place. You don’t wake up and find that there has been a Batman TV show someplace.”

He also said regarding DC’s value to the company that:

“DC is one of the biggest opportunities this company [has]. Our company is a creative company and so we found two great guys. You will see a lot of growth around DC. We haven’t done a Superman movie in 13 years.”

So Zaslav has a clear vision- to bring it all under one roof with one driving force who oversees it all. Similar to Kevin Feige who controls the MCU. And it looks like his appointed DCU CEO’s, Gunn and Safran, are busy figuring out a similar bible for DC as well.

Recently, James Gunn posted pictures of Lobo and Mr. Terrific on his Mastodon account. Many fans took it to be a sign that these characters will be incorporated in future DC plans. So DC fans will be glad to know that the DCU is being steadily worked on.
