Werewolf by Night, the Halloween Special created by the MCU has been released on Disney+. Basically, the story revolved around a hunt for the Bloodstone. The Bloodstone family is an extremely reputed family of monster hunters. In the aftermath of the passing of Ulysses Bloodstone, the Bloodstone artefact was now looking for a new owner. Consequently, the only way to decide who would get to have such a powerful artefact in their possession was the hunt. The stone was pressed onto the back of a monster, Ted aka Man-Thing, and the hunters had to retrieve the stone. So what exactly are its powers?

The stone was used in Werewolf by Night by Verussa, who was the wife of Ulysses and the stepmother of Elsa Bloodstone. Here are the few powers we saw the stone exhibit in the special. Firstly, when the Bloodstone was attached to the back of Ted aka Man-Thing it was weakening him. Jack Russell says this after he meets Ted in the maze. The Bloodstone if touched by a monster will blast it off. So the stone can detect who are monsters and who isn’t. The stone was then used by Verussa to force Jack Russel to turn into a werewolf. The stone can apparently turn any monster into its true form. Bloodstone was also used to generate energy blasts when Verussa tried to fend off Werewolf.

Its history in Marvel Comics

The Bloodstone too has been inspired by Marvel comics just like the rest of the concept of Werewolf by Night. It was initially known as the Bloodgem. This is when it was still in possession of Ulysses Bloodstone. It first appeared in Marvel presents #1 in 1975. It was conceived by Marv Wolfman and Len Wein along with writer John Warner and artist Mike Vosburg. The origin of the Bloodgem was said to be cosmic in nature.

It ended up on Earth during the prehistoric era. In fact, it is claimed to have evolved the early men and turned them towards the modern world by giving them increased intelligence. Turns out the Bloodstone was actually created by the Exo-Mind. The Exo-Mind was a race of aliens who wanted to take over the world. Eventually it was claimed by Ulysses Bloodstone who passes it on to his daughter Elsa.

When Ulysses found the Bloodstone, it  gave him increased strength, endurance and extended to him its ability to detect monsters. This ability was like a sixth sense or ESP. It also gave him the gift of immortality. This allowed him to survive for thousands of years as a monster hunter. Additionally the stone gave his enhanced resistance to natural elements. The stone attached itself to Ulysses’ chest and killed the rest of his tribe. Using this stone he  became a monster hunter and went after the alien who wanted the Bloodstone for himself.

As seen in the special, Werewolf by Night, the Bloodstone could be used to turn and control monsters. The stone was meant to be a vessel for Hellfire Helix and contained magical energies. It could absorb the energies from living beings and give its user the ability to draw energy from the stone. The stone was said to have enormous powers. Barely any of its powers have been explored in Werewolf by Night. Now that Elsa Bloodstone is in possession of the stone, we hope to see much more of what it can truly do.
