Exploring the future of Namor played by Tenoch Huerta after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in upcoming projects of the MCU.
Ryan Coogler has given us two amazing villains. While Black Panther gave us Erik Killmonger played by Michael B Jordan, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever gave us Namor played by Tenoch Huerta. He was less a villain and more of an antihero. With his complex past and the burden of responsibility, Namor emerged to become an angry vengeful villain who was feared by his enemies but loved by his fellow men and women of Talocan. So let us explore his future in the MCU and the possible future projects he may be involved in.
There have been several rumors regarding Namor’s appearances in the MCU. It has been claimed that the MCU is setting up a franchise for Namor just as they did for Black Panther with his appearance in Civil War. He will ideally become a recurring character in the MCU. In fact Tenoch Huerta himself has expressed his desire for a longer contract with Marvel Studios. He has displayed his excitement for the role and looks forward to future appearances. Kevin Feige too indicated that Namor’s involvement in the future of the MCU is very much on the table depending on how Wakanda Forever turns out.
Namor could appear in a number of different projects in the MCU. One such project is obviously Black Panther 3. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ended with an alliance forming between Namor and Shuri that united the empires of Talocan and Wakanda. Eventually when Wakanda faces an external threat, he is most likely to appear and help Shuri protect her Kingdom. In fact, the threat could very well be Doctor Victor Von Doom. Doom’s invasion of Wakanda in his search for Vibranium is a perfect storyline to introduce his character. Another possible project Namor could appear in is Fantastic Four. In Marvel Comics, the underwater antihero has a complicated relationship with Sue Storm aka Invisible Woman. He has tried to woo her on multiple occasions. Sue Storm has even cheated on Reed Richards with Namor. He has also been both an enemy and ally of the Fantastic Four in several instances.
Namor could also appear in Thunderbolts if the Contessa decides to invade either Wakanda or Talocan. A few other possible projects where he could reappear are Avengers: Kang Dynasty or Secret Wars. After all, almost every character in the MCU is rumored to appear including both Iron Man and Captain America. This would also be the perfect opportunity for Namor to mix and gel with the other superheroes in the Universe.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever directly declares the fact that Namor is a mutant in the MCU. During the movie and in the trailer, tiny wings can be seen attached to his ankle. Now we already know that an X-Men movie is in the making and will be announced soon enough. After all, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk and even Deadpool 3 have all teased the presence of mutants in the MCU Universe. When this project finally happens, Namor is definitely one of the characters likely to make an appearance.
While there have been rumors and even requests by fans for a solo movie featuring Namor and his past, it is definitely an unlikely possibility in the near future. Its another case of contracts and rights. The rights to Namor were acquired by Universal Studios in the 1990s. However, Marvel reacquired the rights to his character in 2014 once again. Nonetheless, due to complications with the contracts, Kevin Feige has said that a Namor movie is still not a possibility. Thus akin to Hulk, he will most likely only be allowed to appear in team up projects and movies with ensemble casts. However, we are sure that Namor will make many more powerful appearances in the MCU and even get his own movie eventually all in due time.
