Fans who were disappointed by the last season of Game Of Thrones (GOT) were currently treated with HBO’s latest offering – House of the Dragon (HOTD). Ardent fans of George R. R. Martin’s world of Ice and Fire are rejoicing all over the world. However, do you know that there are many more GOT spin-offs currently in development at the studio? The best part, the author is actively involved in almost all of them. So, without further ado, let us look into them one by one.

Snow

Jon Snow in GOT

Even though the rightful heir to the throne, Jon Snow, ended up going back to North beyond the wall at the end of GOT. His brother Bran Stark is made the ruler of the seven kingdoms, and the fans were left…well, empty. Something just did not felt right about the series’ ending, it felt unsatisfactory. However, things are soon about to change.

The author of the book series, himself said in his personal blog – “Our working title for the show is Snow.” He further said that the idea for the series was pitched by the Jon Snow actor (Kit Harrington) himself. Martin further states that –

There’s not much more I can tell you, not until HBO gives me a green light. I cannot tell you the names of the writers/ showrunners, since that has not been cleared for release yet… but Kit brought them in too, his own team, and they are terrific.

Although the show has not yet made its way past the development stage, it seems highly likely that this will be a project that HBO will prioritize.

10,000 Ships

After HOTD, the next prequel series that is most likely to hit television next is – 10,000 Ships. Set 1,000 years before the events of GOT, even before the events of HOTD, the series focuses on the founder of Dorne – Princess Nymeria, who set to Dorne from Essos. Nymeria is accompanied by the Rhoynar survivors on her fleet of 10,000 ships after the devastation suffered by Valyrian dragonlords. Their journey takes them to many different lands around the Summer Sea, from the dinosaur-infested jungles of Sothoryos, to the Summer Islands, before they finally migrate to Dorne.

The development of the series was long back confirmed from the Deadline in 2021. It was even announced that the screenwriter Amanda Segal has been ordered to draft a pilot script for the series. It remains to be seen whether HBO will order a pilot episode to be filmed. The series probably won’t debut until 2024. On March 2022, George R. R. Martin gave an update on the series in another personal blog, saying –

The other one is TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, the Nymeria series. Amanda Segel, our showrunner, has delivered a couple drafts of that one, and we are forging ahead.

A tale of Dunk and Egg

George R. R. Martin’s novellas

The author George R. R. Martin has written three novellas that are set 90 years before GOT. The novellas are centered around Ser Duncan, the Tall (also known as “Dunk”), and a young Aegon V Targaryen (aka “Egg”) during their early adventures. The series shall be called, The Tales of Dunk and Egg and will include the following books – 1998’s The Hedge Knight, 2003’s The Sworn Sword, and 2010’s The Mystery Night. An hour-long series adaptation is currently in development, but details are scarce.

Back in 2021, the news of the series’ development at HBO was broken by Variety themselves. However, so far no writer or talent has been yet attached to the project, and the fans are left waiting for an official announcement regarding this series.

9 Voyages or The Sea Snake

Lord Corlys Velaryon in HOTD

Steve Toussaint is been leaving a standout impression as the Lord Corlys Velaryon aka The Sea Snake in the ongoing  HOTD series. He was one of the most enigmatic members of the King’s council as Viserys’s Lord of the Ships. However, Corlys earned the reputation of The Sea Snake through his many infamous adventures as a naval warrior. His journeys take him and his crew to the very edges of the known world. From the polar wastes of the Shivering Sea in the north to the far east of the Jade Sea, Corlys goes on to become the first man from the Seven Kingdoms to directly voyage beyond Qarth to the Golden Empire of Yi Ti itself. Through his voyages, Young Corlys acquires so many exotic riches that he becomes the richest man in Westeros.

That is what the upcoming series – The Sea Snake will seemingly focus upon, Corlys’s sea adventures. The series was initially called  – the 9 Voyages because it supposedly focused on Corlys’s famous nine voyages of exploration to lands beyond Westeros. However, considering the 10,000 ships was also under development, the working title was changed to The Sea Snake to avoid having too many numbers in its titles. Deadline even reported that Bruno Heller (creator of The Mentalist, Rome, and Gotham) has been hired to draft a pilot episode.

Golden Empire of Yi Ti – Animated

First reported by The Hollywood Reporter, another HBO spin-off having the least amount of knowledge by audiences is an animated series focusing on the exploration of the Golden Empire of Yi Ti located in Essos. The empire was not much explored in GOT  except for an instant where the name appears briefly in Season 7. In the scene Gilly, while in the Citadel of Old Town, reads a copy of The World of Ice & Fire, and there is one visible page mentioning Yi Ti by name. Also, Lord Corlys Velaryon did sail to Yi Ti 200 years before the War of the Five Kings in Westeros.

The Yi Ti kingdom is inspired by many histories of Southeast Asia (particularly Imperial China). The animated series will focus on this lesser-known kingdom, it’s grandiose and significance in the world of ice and fire.

How many of these series will eventually see the light of the day, is a question of the future. But for now, we as fans are excited knowing that the world of Westeros is not going anywhere soon.
