Quentin Tarantino is one of the most celebrated Hollywood directors. Many actors starring in his movies have went on to enjoy unprecedented levels of stardom and critical acclaim.  So when he said that Marvel actors are not movie stars, the whole internet gasped. And then began the great debate. MCU’s Shang-Chi actor, Simu Liu, chimed in to defend Marvel, and now one or MCU’s stalwarts, Samuel L. Jackson has slammed Tarantino as well. Read on to know the details.

Samuel L. Jackson Challenges Quentin Tarantino’s Words On Marvel Actors

A few days back, at the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast, Quentin Tarantino talked about the “Marvel-ization of Hollywood” and how the actors in the Marvel movies weren’t movie stars. He had said:

“Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is…you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters,” Tarantino said. “But they’re not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star. I mean, I’m not the first person to say that. I think that’s been said a zillion times…but it’s like, you know, it’s these franchise characters that become a star.”

Samuel L. Jackson is a celebrated Hollywood star. But it can’t be denied that all over the world, he is best known for portraying Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So when Tarantino proclaimed that Marvel movie actors are not movie stars, he stepped in with a few words for the acclaimed director.

In an interview with The View, Samuel L. Jackson said that the measure of stardom was uncertain. Also, he used the example of Chadwick Boseman, who played Black Panther, to convey the idea that one can be a MCU actor and a movie star:

“It takes an actor to be those particular characters, and the sign of movie stardom has always been, what, asses in seats? What are we talking about? That’s not a big controversy for me to know that apparently these actors are movie stars. Chadwick Boseman is Black Panther. You can’t refute that, and he’s a movie star.”

The Actor Would Much Rather Be Nick Fury

Samuel L. Jackson has been playing the role of Nick Fury in the MCU ever since he appeared in the end credits scenes of Iron Man (2008). And he loves the character. During an interview in June with the Los Angeles Times, the actor said that he prefers roles like Nick Fury and not Oscar-baiting ones. As per him:

“I was never going to let the Oscars be a measure of my success or failure as an actor. My yardstick of success is my happiness: Am I satisfied with what I’m doing? I’m not doing statue-chasing movies. You know [whispers]: ‘If you do this movie, you’ll win an Oscar.’ No, thanks. I’d rather be Nick Fury. Or having fun being Mace Windu with a lightsaber in my hand.”

The Marvel vs Tarantino debate is still raging with people choosing sides. So are you with Samuel L. Jackson and Simu Liu or with Quentin Tarantino?
