Exploring the time when Loki became the Sorcerer Supreme displacing Doctor Strange, and the chances of this happening in the MCU.
The Sorcerer Supreme in the Marvel Universe is defined as a “practitioner of the mystic or magic arts who has greater skills than all others or commands a greater portion of the ambient magical energies than any other organism on a given world or “dimension”. In the MCU itself, we have seen 3 students of the mystic arts take up the mantle of sorcerer supreme including Wong and Doctor Strange. However, what fans don’t know is that there are many more characters in the MCU who have been the Sorcerer Supreme in the comics. This may come as a shock to some, but Loki, the god of mischief was also once the Sorcerer Supreme.
Loki became the Sorcerer Supreme in typical Loki fashion where he tricked Doctor Strange into giving up his title to him. During the Tournament of Sorcerers hosted by Vishanti, Doctor Strange once again defeated all other participants and sorcerers. In fact he had been doing so for the last two decades. However, in a major twist, the Vishanti announced Loki the God of Mischief as the next Sorcerer Supreme. Weirdly, not only did Loki not defeat Doctor Strange he didn’t even participate in the tournament. Strange refused to believe what was happening and suspected that there was something else at play. However, he had no option and had to give up the title as is the tradition.
And that’s how Loki became the Sorcerer Supreme. The MCU could also explore such a tournament on the big screen. However, instead of Loki winning by trickery it would be pretty cool to see him outmaneuver and defeat the other sorcerers including maybe Doctor Strange.
We have definitely seen Doctor Strange surpass several other sorcerers with more time and experience. For a human being, his control over magic is unseen and unheard of. However, that’s where the problem lies. At the end of the day he is only human. Loki would definitely be the stronger Sorcerer Supreme owing to his godly nature. He is more durable and stronger. His body can endure even the most taxing forms of magic and wont get exhausted as easily as Doctor Strange.
In the MCU though this seems to be slightly different. Doctor Strange definitely seems more powerful than Loki. This is especially when comparing their confrontations with Thanos. However this can also be due to other factors such as Thanos needed Doctor Strange alive for the time stone while he could easily dispose of Loki without hesitation. Similarly while battling Thanos, Doctor Strange was aided by the Guardians, Iron Man and Spider-Man. The MCU has definitely not done Loki justice despite him having his own show. His powers in the comics are much greater than those in the MCU. If Loki were to become Sorcerer Supreme even for a short time, it would be a great way to truly explore his potential.
In the comic issue where he became the Sorcerer Supreme, he wanted to find a spell known as The Exile of Singhsoon. This spell would allow him to strip the entire universe of all its magic and absorb it into himself. In fact the entire tournament was just an illusion that Loki had created in order to get the title of the Sorcerer Supreme.
Loki is unpredictable, mischievous and likes to have fun. This would make him a very interesting Sorcerer Supreme. In the MCU, Loki is currently making his shift from villain to hero. As a character, he has shown immense growth but still remains as ambitious as ever. It would be quite fun to see how he would balance these two sides of himself. All we know for sure is that the story would be chaotic but in the best way possible.
Vishanti who are basically a trio of supernatural, god-like entities who act as patrons for the Sorcerer Supreme and defenders of the Earth realm organize a tournament for sorcerers every few decades. In the course of the tournament, the sorcerers battle each other to prove their mettle. Eventually the Vishanti announce the next Sorcerer Supreme.
