Marvel Comics announced earlier this year that Spider-Verse architect Dan Slott will be returning to the universe for one more time, concluding the “Spider-Verse” with a new narrative titled, Edge of Spider-Verse.
Leinil Francis Yu’s new variant cover for Marvel’s Edge of Spider-Verse #1 introduces readers to a new character, Spider-Rex, a dinosaur hybrid of Spider-Man. Edge of Spider-Verse #1, by Karla Pacheco and Pere Perez, hits shelves on August 3. This is where Spider-Rex will make his first appearance.
Spider-Rex is a prehistoric take on the wall-crawling hero and has been revealed as one of the new Spidey heroes to appear in the comic by Marvel Comics.
Each issue of Edge of Spider-Verse will wrap up the Spider-Verse with a three-part story arc written by Dan Slott. Alex Segura and Dustin Weaver will also be contributing to the new series with Slott and Pacheco. Martin Coccolo, Caio Majado, Pere Perez, and Dustin Weaver will create the series’ visuals.
In an interview with Polygon, Slott discussed the reality of “the end of the Spider-Verse” and calls it a “fiery conclusion”:
“Marvel has decided to do the unthinkable, go big, and bring the saga of the comic book Spider-Verse to a fiery conclusion. Yes, that’s right. Later this year we shall all bear witness to THE END OF THE SPIDER-VERSE!”
When asked whether the events in End of Spider-Verse marked the end of the Spider-Verse, Slott couldn’t help but make light of the fact that death never signals the end of a superhero’s story in comics.
“If you ask me, it’s madness, Why would they do this? WHY? They could’ve milked this spider-cash-cow for decades. That said, if you are going to do it, going all-out in a blaze of glory is definitely the way to go!”
Spider-Rex definitely sounds like a hero worth investing our time in. Like many other characters in Marvel Comics, it may seem unlikely that this hybrid will come to life in the MCU. However, an animation series would be just perfect.
