Marvel Studios surprised everyone with their first Special Presentation – Werewolf By Night. It introduced the fans to an unknown corner of the Marvel world – the Monsters, and their Hunters. The special was directed and composed by Michael Giacchino and was written by Heather Quinn and Peter Cameron. It stars Gael García Bernal as Jack Russell / Werewolf by Night, Laura Donnelly as Elsa Bloodstone, and Harriet Sansom Harris as Verussa Bloodstone in significant roles. The special received many praises for its practical effects and noir cinematography paying homage to retro Hollywood.

The series follows a group of ferocious hunters who are called to the Bloodstone Mansion when its owner Ulysses Bloodstone passes away. Competition begins among the hunters for slaying a monster and proving their worth for the Bloodstone family’s heirloom – a Bloodstone. A stone magical and powerful enough to weaken any kind of monster and give longevity and strength to its owner. So, who are these hunters exactly? Let’s find out.

Azarel

Azarel

Portrayed by Eugenie Bondurant, Azarel stays in memory for his character design, especially the outfit. He bears a looming presence during the entire special and gets into all the action as the movie ascends to its climax. Azarel seems pretty sharp in his amazing, out of the white outfit. Verussa Bloodstone declares that Azarel have had 37 monster-kills in his life, making him one of the notorious hunters in the room. Unfortunately, Azarel doesn’t get to do much more than look great and die trying.

Jovan

Joshua Jovan

Kirk Thatcher plays the role of ferocious Joshua Jovan. He often boasts of his 57 confirmed monster-kills. Jovan is probably the only hunter out of the lot who approaches Gael Garcia’s Jack in appreciation, when Jack joins them. He has big, dominating personality and somewhat possesses a sporty humor. Jovan is probably the only one getting maximum opportunities for action as he never wastes a second in attacking his fellow hunters as soon as they all enter the ‘garden maze’ for the hunt. Jovan has an interesting fight sequence with Elsa Bloodstone, but he sadly becomes the first victim of Man-Thing in the MCU.

Liorn

Liorn

Leonardo Nam’s Liorn did not get a big role as Kirk’s Joshua in the events of Marvel’s Special. He, however, appeared the coolest of them all and as Verussa mentioned, Liorn had 43 confirmed monster kills up his sleeve before joining them. Liorn mostly remained silent throughout the series, making him more of a curious character. Once in the ‘garden maze’, he decides to hide behind the door of mortuary and wait for his prey. As soon as Elsa reaches near the door, Liorn attacks her with his indigenous dart hand-gun.  However, Liorn doesn’t die unless he shows his amazing fighting skill with Elsa Bloodstone, but ultimately Elsa succeeds in chopping his hands off and killing him with his own weapon.

Barasso

Barasso

Played by Daniel J. Watts, Barasso is another quiet monster hunter in the mix like Liorn. Although getting limited screen time and dialogue, Barasso did appear to be the most charming of the lot. He succeeds in surviving the longest amongst all the hunters until he succumbs to the claws of Werewolf By Night. Throughout his screentime, he mostly just stands around with his demeaneour. Not much canbe said about the character, except the fact that he has reportedly 26 confirmed monster-kills in his life until coming to the Bloodstone manor.

Elsa Bloodstone

Elsa Bloodstone

The only one significant enough for MCU’s future, Elsa Bloodstone (played brilliantly by Laura Donnelly), is the only person that shares a history (and blood) with he Bloodstone family. Elsa is the daughter of the deceased Ulysses Bloodstone and stepdaughter of Verussa Bloodstone. She portrays a strong personality and some killer moves in her action skills. Elsa (with no confirmed monster kill) enters the arena of the hunt with the other skilled Hunters to prove her worth. She can easily rival Black Widow in hand-to-had combat.

Charming, sexy, and beautiful, she reminds one of Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones. Elsa has a long history in Marvel comics and had first made her appearance in Bloodstone #1 (2001). She also has a brother named Callus Bloodstone, who might appear later in MCU. She befriends Jack Russel (Werewolf By night) and Ted (Man-Thing), and succeeds in her quest of obtaining the Bloodstone by the ends of the Special. MCU surely has some big future plans for the character, and we are not complaining!
