Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has recently culminated its Phase 4 with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Since its release, the movie has garnered immense love and respect from fans worldwide. The film had too much riding on its shoulders and it proved victorious, indeed. In the mid-credit scene of the movie, we are finally introduced to T’Challa and Nakia’s secret son. But who is he? Let’s find out. Huge Spoilers Ahead for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever!

T’Challa’s son in Marvel Comics

Azari is in the Next Avengers

In the Marvel comics, T’Challa’s son is named – Azari, and not Toussaint. Azari first appeared in the Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow (2008), an animated film set in an apocalyptic future where the Avengers were killed by Ultron, leaving their children—one of them being Azari—behind. Azari is the son of Black Panther (aka T’Challa) and Storm (aka Ororo Monroe). The character was created by Brian Michael Bendis and John Romita Jr. Mentored by an aging Tony Stark, Azari and his super-powered friends teamed up to stop Ultron. Azari was then brought into Marvel Comics continuity in 2010’s Avengers #1.

In the comics, Azari is a mutant and has the powers and abilities that he has inherited from both his parents.  He possesses enhanced speed, agility, strength, endurance, healing, and senses. Azari also has the power of electrokinesis and can thus create force fields and project blasts of electricity in the shape of a Panther. He is smart and is an expert in all forms of armed and unarmed combat.

T’Challa’s son in MCU

Divine Love Konadu-Sun plays Toussaint, the son of T’Challa

In the mid-credit scene of Wakanda Forever, Shuri (Letitia Wright) goes to a beach in Haiti, behind Nakia’s (Lupita Nyong’o) home. There she burns the ceremonial garb she wore to T’Challa’s funeral as she finds closure for his passing. At that moment, she is approached by Nakia and a boy, who turns out to be T’Challa and Nakia’s son. The boy is introduced by his Haitian name – Toussaint. However, he later reveals his Wakandan name: T’Challa, Prince of Wakanda.

“My name is Prince T’Challa, son of King T’Challa,” he says.

Toussaint/T’Challa is played by a young actor Divine Love Konadu-Sun. Considering Toussaint was born during the time when T’Challa was blipped, he would be around six years old during the movie. It is also highly unlikely we might see him again as Wakanda’s story will likely be told (probably in the Wakanda Disney+ show or Black Panther 3) after a significant time jump.

The Likely Future

Shuri as the Black Panther in Black Panther Wakanda Forever

As has been made clear, T’Challa never had a son named Toussaint in the original comic run. The character is a total manifestation of the MCU world and does not exist in comics. Therefore it’s unknown what route the MCU might take for the character in future projects. However, one thing is for sure – the boy is too young to become a king. But, given his enthusiasm about his father being “King T’Challa,” he could theoretically be willing to become king at some point. However, it is also revealed at the end of the movie that Shuri leaves the throne to M’Baku (Winston Duke).

If Shuri decides to never reclaim the throne and M’Baku bears his own children in the future, T’Challa’s son could pose threat to their inheritance. However, given how respectful and loyal is M’Baku to T’Challa and his family, he might happily pass on the throne to the young son of T’Challa. Now whether that lands well with his children remains to be seen. Also, it is unclear whether Toussaint (aka the young T’Challa) would assume the mantle of Black Panther as well. But unless he comes of age, Shuri shall continue being the current Black Panther. Also, at the end of the movie, Shuri succeeds in creating a new Heart-Shaped Herb, which means that new Black Panthers are, once again, possible.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is now in theaters.
